I think we'll get one of two, not sure how big though. The summer is the time we will surely see most coming and some going though, that is when players become more available.

If everyone is correct and there are to be no big signings during January would Danny Murphy not be a good signing. I know he is not going to get many peoples pulses racing but an excellent experienced player available for peanuts, worth a shout?

We need to make sure we have enough cover to avoid a relegation scrap. Don't forget the higher we finish the best chance we have of attracting talent. I agree it will be hard to attact quality but a few players are out of contract in the summer and will be sold now. Upson, Cook of QPR, Boa Morte, Sidwell. These are the ones I know about. Then of course SWP is on offer and players that have been touted to clubs we don't know about. Like JF I feel a little impatient but perhaps we have to wait until the games are over during the next few days. UTV

Good shout for craig gordon - Danny Murphy - not sure if it could go the way Berger did. One big forward that we all forgotten - Emile Heskey - Six goals this season. I think he worked for MON before.

The biggest impact in terms of effectively being like new signings would simply be a fit Luke Moore, Mark Delaney, and Laurrson.
Left back then becomes the priority to restore GB to midfield. Luke Moore, Gabby and Vassell would have been an unorthodox troublesome threesome full of width and effort. I don't want to sign a striker unless they are better than our current misfiring frontmen - and I'm not convinced anybody is available to Villa who falls into that category. Surprises from MON most welcome rather than Nugent, Beattie, Keane and co. Kevin Davies would be an MON style frontman who could do a job.

Pretty dull list if we're looking to reach for the stars over the next 3 years. Has'nt anyone got any better suggestions. Keane, Bent, Crouch, SWW, Richardson, Brown and Smith (Man U). I would personally welcome any of these, but I'm sure there are many, many more that Martin is working on -let's hope so anyway and wish him well.

I don't think the big stars will yet come to villa. We aren't that attractive propisition yet. What need is players who can steady the ship and get us into the top six. If this acheived hopefully the new board will fund further improvement - and then who knows.
I get the feeling if O Neil wants a big man up front - he isn't neccesarily looking for a prolific goalscorer - hence the likes of Heskey, Harewood, Nugent - might catch his eye.

I'm a US fan of Villa (been a fan for 6 years, so long before Lerner came along). Why not think of american players. Brian McBride (who played in Columbus) Carlos Bocanegra, Claudio Reyna, DeMarcus Beasley (who scored this weekend) all show that a US player can do reasonably well in the EPL. I would like to see Onyewu (currently plays in Germany) I would also like to see Twellman given a look. (He is a forward who reminds my of Rooney's style). Especially with Lerner involved, why not give a look at a couple of americans, the US Villans might increase... I'm lonely over here !!

Strikers are the priority and if we can't get Ronaldinho and Eto'o then I'd go all out for Bent and Nugent as we clearly need 2 strikers so we can get rid of the useless JPA and MB!!! UTV SOTC

I agree with comments about the list not being too mouth watering, I wouldnt be surprised if O'Neil bags a more exotic signing than those listed - why not if we have the cash. Saying that I would love to see Bent at VP.

I was thinking of starting a "I've seen SWP at the IBIS near the Belfry" type rumour!
Its incredible how little transfer action is around, agents touting their greedy players to as many clubs as possible. No wonder a lot of clubs look abroad for value (too many foreigners argument is somewhat self inflicted/bigotted).
I am very nervous about all this transfer dealing after the Milner/Solano fiasco and Baros will he/won't he deal (wish he didn't!, but hindsight eh). I suppose if Newcastle are ready to off load any players, no one will want to play ball with ShepherdEllis.
I heard Ellington and Gera are up for grabs at 5m....Any takers??

Spot on Tyler..I have said a similar thing just now on the news thread. We need a couple of big stars we can worship. I don't fancy Harewood one bit. Although strikers are always a gamble (just look at Beattie compared with say Anelka in recent months). It's just getting quality to join us without European football and at least competing with the top four (we never beat them) - Players now adays want to be in the spot light. Patience is difficult in the window. I reckon Graveson was a better option than Petrov and still get angry about selling Nobby back for peanuts in exchange for giving Milner a years worth of experience. Are there any Platts, Ian Taylor's or Crouch's out there?

Couple of names for you all, we need a natural finisher(s). RASIAK (scored a hatful and been injured) and/or EARNSHAW (ugly but always scores regularly in poor teams). This speculation is fun but distracting, I think we need to know Martin and Randy's list - we should try and guess that first. There is some sense in the SWP/Milner and the Ferguson rumours, but I am unsure whether we'd do business with Shepherd Ellis after the 11th hour call off. There needs to be a few moves to start the merry go round - that didn't happen in August when Newcastle failed to sign Huth and Viduka (otherwise Milner would be a villan)

This is where the likes of you and i say, "I saw MON and Reo-Coker and a third man in a restaurant in Soho last night!" F**k knows if there's a word of truth in any of it, but its not like the Upson rumour hasn't been doing the rounds already.

Angel is a target man, just not a very good one. that Stearman looks a good player, it wouldn't be a bad swap for both teams considering we don't play hendrie or samuel.
I'm a little concerned about that Dica story, you see players like him make there way to england all the time and never do anything.

Bardsley = DJ twins? I am uneasy about signing Man U cast offs, although God was one of them. We'll have to pay the price for quality, bargains are long gone I'm afraid, unless we have European football on offer. Look at the price of Boa Morte, Obe Martins, Dean Ashton, Anelka, AJ, Scott Parker, Crouch, Emule Huskey and Jermaine Pennant! If we are in the market for two decent players we aren't gonna get much change out of £20m. The price doesn't change much now or in the summer, anyway if the have impact beteween now and the end of the season...

eltroro villa have been the one club not to use the loan market to any effect, this was under the ellis era which was so behind the times. it also cost the club dear by signing supposedly big name players on long contracts for big money only to find they were not good enough or couldnt settle..! now we have proper people in charge who know what they are doing.

eltoro, the only reason that we stayed up last year is because we signed Milner on loan, he was our best player. I think if teams are unwilling to part with quality players on a permenant basis, and a club like Villa is in dire need of enforcements but unable to get any then a loan is they way to go. Villa need at least 5 players in to get a side that will comfortably stay in the premiership at the moment, if anyone thinks that we can qualify for europe this season they are kidding themselves. It has been mentioned time and time again that it is difficult to get players in in january, therefore in order to get a team capable of staying up confortably may have to get loan signings. what would do the club no good is if we shyed away from loan signings and couldn't sign anyone on a permenant basis, because then we would be in trouble.

SWP is currently paid £60k a week at Chelski... is he that good and would Villa be able to match those sorts of wages? West Ham pulled out of the deal because they couldn't match his current terms.

This is my 1st post on the site, but certainly not my 1st visit. Does anyone know if the new Lerner regime has restructured the salary structures for the players wages?? I know that historically we're were always having problems attracting talent under the Ellis regime with salaryies capped at certain levels. If Lerner's prepared to pay big sums to land players as well as increase the salary caps, then surely we can sustain players like SWP and more. UTV

Randy should have already gotten rid of the villa wage cap...he owns the 7th richest american football team and the players arent exactly paid peanuts over there!!...its probably more than footie players. Randy will already know top players want 60k+ per week. He has already stated his ambition is to get us into the champions league and that costs money. We'll be fine just need a bit of patience

There may be American football players on +60k a week but in American football there is a wage cap for the whole team so there may be a few highly paid stars but the wages of the whole team can not exceed the cap for the Club.

Forget about Bent he's overpriced and injured.If Charlton go down he'll be on his way anyway.Bellamy and Keane were devestating up front in CM3 and Billy Sharp from Scunthorpe is definatley worth a gamble.

None of the strikers linked with Villa so far are better than Baros, we should do as the Fear suggested in his article last week. Give Baros a decent run in the side and buy some quality midfield players to support him. As for Angel, yes, agreed, get rid of him.

Have to feel a bit sorry for JPA he always works his guts out and I get the impression he really cares about the club,unfortunatley he's about as effective as a catflap in an elephant house.Hope he gets a move to Scotland he'd do alright up there I think.

baros is no good, all he does is get the ball put his head down, run into defenders and then lose the ball. Yeah i like, he seems like he loves the club but he the touch of a rapist and looks like he needs a waking frame to get around. any of the forwards mentioned will get a game over both of them.

SWP lookin like a hammer??? if he goes on loan it would make more sense think the hammers are serious relegation fodder this year but his family are all in londinium so prob wants to stay there. not convinced about him myself but then again he is prob low of confidence due to lack of games(sounds like Baros)

This is what frstrates me soooooooooooo much!! We are losing out on a player because they would prefer to go to West Ham, instead of us!! Whatever next, players wanting to go to Watford or Shef Utd?? This is a player we need so badly and one we just can't miss out on. MON and Randy should do everything to get Ahsley Young and SWP to Villa Park and I mean anything! Sometimes, you need to pay over the odds and break the wage bill to move the club forward. Otherwise, bringing in average players to fill the squad will leave us mid-table for ever.

Villa is not a london club and all the money in the world will not change that.I dont know what the difference in lifestyle is between B6 and London but most rich young men prefer LDN even if SWP joins us it would probably be on loan and his heart would be somewhere else.We've spent too long signing non comitted players that we've paid over the odds for and look where its got us.

The key with SWP, will be the wages. He's on 60k per week - great work if you can get it. If either us or the Hammers sign him it sets a benchmark with all the other players. I've a feeling too that Reo-Coker will be off loaded if SWP comes in. He wants to go to a top four club.

I'd be happy with a centre back (Davis or Upson) midfield/winger (Milner or Young or SWP) and a striker (Rasiak or Smith). Loans if necessary.

I agree jonah. I've been impressed with Cahill and with Mellberg and Laursen, not to mention Ridgewell we don't need a centre back this side of the summer at least. Wingers and a seasoned pro in midfield. The strikers we've been linked to are nippy players. I thought he'd go for target man as Angel and Sutton aren't the worlds best. It is an interesting thought though if we had a better team would Baros be more successful and therefore happy to stay. With a decent target man, Baros, Moore and Gabby could feed off him.

I agree with Gazvilla we have plenty of quick strikers like Gabby and moore but a target man is needed, angel and sutton are getting on in years and MON likes his target man as shown by him taking sutton to celtic in the first place. Villa also have the back bone of a great team here with cahill,davis,gabby,ridgewell,moore and maybe osborne all looking to be able to hold their own in the prem league all ready, a few choise buy's could turn a good team into a great team within a year. I think Billy Sharp would be good as he is scoring almost every week and Bent at a rip off price Sharp i think would be much better then Bent at Villa and Much,MUCH,MUCH cheaper.Why Not

Billy Sharp is playing in division 1, its a big differance from the Chapionship let alone the premiership. And Rasiak is one of the worst Premier League forwards i have ever seen when he was with Tottenham. They would both be really bad signings. But i definately agree that we need a deent Target man. I think we need a centre back too though, because every decent team has a great defence with defenders that are consistatnly good and rarely injured. Mellberg and ridgewell has not been so consistant, laursen has played about 10 games in 3 years and Cahill is still pretty young. We need another quality defender, that is a straight up starter and then the defender out of the ones we have that is in form to partner him. I'd say that we will have to get rid of one of the ones we've got though at the end of the season. Probably laursen if he doesn't put a run of games together. even though i think he is probably the best defender we have at the moment, he is just too injury prone.

liamo - You have a point about centre of defence but I don't see Upson (injury prone) or Curtis (another young improver) being the answer. If we could sign a pure quality signing then, yes. But can we do it in January??

Kris Boyd Stats this season 15 goals in 26 games. 19 starts(7 sub) I know a lot of people dont rate scotish football very highly but its a mistake to rule out the big two up there.After all celtic beat man u in the champions league.

Gaz- I agree to a certain extent. i havn't seen Curtis play, but if Arsenal and co are after him he must be decent, and obviously a bit further along than Cahill in his development. But you are right in what you are saying about both, it would definately be better to get a top class defender, that you are certain will be good, and it probably wont happen in January.
But, if Curtis is as good as he is being made out to be, then he might be worth a punt. you often see these defenders come from nowhere and then turning out to be class, and at the moment it doesn't look like happening with any of our defenders, except possibly cahill.

Yeah i think ridgewell has been better than cahill this year, but i think Cahill has more potential. But both of them have not been world class, which is what we need a world class centre back. i think they need a bit more time to develop.

we desperately need TWO wingers. i'd take young and lee cook if we can't get SWP. Bellamy is another one i like but is not prolific enough to play as a forward, possibly wide right or left. we need pace and flair on the wings and down the middle. anyone reckon mon will dispense with full backs competely and go to a genuine 3-5-2?

I reckon Laursen should be replaced. Having watched Cahill a few times I'm beginning to see shades of Paul McGrath in his game (a la the duck under Nevilles ball into the box), I pray he only continues to get better. Ridgewell has played exceptionally well this season too and Mellberg is consitent as always. Laursen is good when he's fit but he's pretty much an empty seat at the dinner table.

If we are now being told its £9 million for Ashley Young then this is very overpriced..! for that kind of money we may as well go for Ricardo Quaresma of FC Porto who would light up Villa Park and have an effect that the sold out signs would be up every home game. Shame he might not be available untill the summer but why not test the water with a strong bid now..!

Cahill is (and I choose my words carefully) another Paul McGrath in the making. Ridgewell has come on leaps and bounds this season. And Mellberg has been performing at his stalwart best. Fingers crossed the 3 stay clear of injuries.
Whilst I agree that a Target-man should be our prioroty, given the opportunity I think we should cut our losses with Laursen and try to replace him. Admittedly he's a great player, but he's no use to us at however many £000's a week out injured. "Strength and Depth" is somethign the top 4 clubs have and that's what we need to aspire to. We really need to have quality options for every position.

Any excitement happening? I asked for people's wish lists yesterday, but most people appeared to be happy with our world beaters! Defenders: Upson or Davis Midfield: SWP or Smith or Young or Gera and Strikers: Bellamy or Rasiak for me! Angel, Hughes, Petrov and Davis have been below par this term - we haven't the squad size to carry thes players long term unless we get bodies in to help out.

I do think Villa could do with a new center back. but a good defending team has good attackers who can hold the ball to at least give the men at the back a rest. spend some of the money on a good center back and some more on one or two quality attackers who have the abilty to hold the ball.
