Villa Yellow Card Tightrope

Ban update:

Olof Mellberg will miss the Manchester United FA Cup clash on 7 Sunday 2007 after picking up his fifth yellow on Saturday after the Charlton defender dived in a total overreaction to Olof pushing him back.

Gareth Barry will miss the Chelsea game on 2 Tuesday 2007 after picking up a red card in the same game.

Meanwhile Gavin McCann says the rules should be changed to stop players being booked for 'nothing' and says the amount of cards needed for a second suspension should be increased from 10 to 15.

McCann, who is currently on 7 yellows said: 'You touch some lads in the game, they roll over and I end up getting booked. I think the authorities have to look at things one way or another. Last Saturday I committed two fouls and ended up getting booked because they are rolling around. A lot of lads will end up getting booked this season just for trying to win the ball. You will mistime things now and again. It's weird but I'm not changing the way I play. They'll have to change the rules. That's the only way.'

'We maybe need 15 yellow cards before you get banned for a second time as players are getting booked for nothing.'

The discipline yellow card tightrope (the what???!!) are:

Gabriel Agbonlahor 1
Juan Pablo Angel 2
Milan Baros 1
Gareth Barry 6 yellow, 1 red
Gary Cahill 2
Gavin McCann 7
Olof Mellberg 5
Stilian Petrov 1
Liam Ridgewell 2
Jlloyd Samuel 1
Chris Sutton 2

Is this also an indication of which players are prepared to give their all for the club? The real triers, including Sutton with few games to his name, seem to have the highest card count.

Indeed, I am just surprised Ridgewell has only got two!! he has made some lovely "old school" tackles. Must admit it is a bad system, especially now that a lot of players need an equity card before they step on the pitch. the play acting now is beyond a joke.

Anyone been booked for celebrating?

The simulation problem must be addressed. What Ronaldo got away with at Boro last week was disgraceful.
gwyllum18
we dont score enough goals to get booked for celebrating!!
samtozer
gwyllum18, Ronaldo simulating? I don't believe you!!!!!!!!!!! and lol samtozer, so ******* true!

thanks fear

Gavin makes some valid points, but expecting the authorities to take note and take appropriate action is a waste of time. We are just going to have to live with what we've got, and sadly the Gavin McCann's of this world will continue to be the one's to suffer the most.

But yellow card fever is the same for all clubs especially around the Christmas and New Year fixture bash. Maybe MON needs to Instill some of the Clough ethic into the current players.

Does Barry just miss the 1 game for his sending off? Thought a straight red meant a 3 game ban?
DeanoVilla
I think it depends on the offence Deano. McCann is right, some of the things players get booked for these days are ridiculous.

we should start a players oscars awards, and actualy send out a prize to the player who wins, if it was done to span all the vital sites, and advertised to the media, could be a nice way of naming and shaming. obviously none of our players would ever be in the nominations.
steff_the_villan
Suspensions will hit us hard right now, certainly until re-inforcements arrive. We cant keep looking at the youngsters to step in and do a job.
