O'Neill Delighted At Saunders Return

Martin O'Neill said he is delighted that Ron Saunders is returning and adds that he'd love to emulate his achievements.

'I don't know him at all, I've never met him. I'm hoping if he has time he might pop in and see us. Somebody has asked him to come along and I'm delighted he is. I wouldn't know the ins and outs of why he left, but I'm really pleased he's coming. Honestly, really pleased. He was an absolutely fantastic manager.'

'He was manager of the side that won the championship and then obviously left then before the European Cup. He takes his place here in the history of the football club, quite rightly so.'

On being asked if he aims to emulate Saunders he replied on the official site:

'Wouldn't that be your ambition to do that? Yes. Of course I'd love to do it! Doing it is another thing. Getting remotely close to it would be pretty difficult. That's why the pictures went up here, because that's what we're trying to achieve.'

The pictures he is referring to is the addition of pictures of the league and European Cup winning team at Bodymoor Heath, put there to remind the current players what Villa have achieved and to inspire them to do so again. Amazing, one exit from Villa Park, and all of a sudden everyone is allowed to take pride in what has been achieved again!

Fingers crossed a bit of the Saunders magic can rub off on the team on Saturday and we stuff Utd 7-0!

The meeting of certainly the most successful Villa manager of my lifetime, with probably the best man we've had at the helm since Ron hit the road to St Andrews. I had a lot of time for Joe Mercer and his 'Mercer Minors' and for Big Ron Atkinson, but Saunders and O'Neill are the best, and potentially the best that yours truly has seen at B6. A very special day lies ahead of us all.
