Blue Nose Defender To Villa?

According to the Daily Mirror, Martin O'Neill is set to bid 3 million bid for Small Heath defender Matthew Upson.

Apparently the Porn barons, sorry, meant the board of Blues realise they'll have to cash in on the centre back as he has just 18 months left on his contract and has turned down all efforts to tie him down to a 'lucrative' new five year deal.

The 27-year-old former Arsenal man, who has 7 England caps, has only recently returned from injury and obviously see's his future away from the Sty. Well, you would wouldn't you?

So, what do you think? Personally I can never give a fig where players come from as long as they give 100% for the cause at Villa. I know some questioned the signing of Chris Sutton saying he was a blue nose (which to me was ridiculous as he only spent one season there and spent half the time on the treatment table).

Dont think we desperately need a new centre half, however Will Young likes him so jobs a good en!!
mackaavfc
he's a good defender, but do we really need a defender at the moment?
bobbyfett
We dont need a centre half. We can already afford to play our best centre half at right back and have our 2nd best on the treatyment table and still put out a decent team. I just dont like Upson.... he certainly doesn't make me feel 'Evergreen'

Was an England international but seems to pick long term injuries too much.
The Fear
we need more players as our squad is too small at the moment so he will do i guess

I trust in the MON to know what he is doing, I also trust in the popular press to be full of **** and link us with all and sundry, and I don't recall Upson been good enough to stop us knocking them down ; )

I don't think we should be giving small heath any of Randy's hard-earned cash. But I don't think it will even get that far: hapless bluenose will break something or other before January, guaranteed. Why not Pressley? He probably has two more years in him, could dust even John Terry off, and is already used to playing in claret. But really, I trust MON to know what's best for us.

I've no problems with Upson but do we really need another centre-back?
Villain Of The North
Couldn't give a monkey's about the Small Heath connection, that to me is completely irrelevant. 1), Do we need another central defender?, 2) Is he good enough, and any better than what we've got? Cant see it happening whatever though. Small Heath wouldn't sell him to our good selves.

last season he could be heard saying 'think i'd better leave right now before blues fall any deeper......' !!!!

I reckon Mellberg is the best right-back in the Premiership - much better at attacking (his crossing is incongruously accurate) and defending than Hughes so it would be good if we could afford to keep him there - with Upson and Cahill centerbacks - rather than a good but highly unexperiened center back duo of Cahill & Ridgewell. Agree with Glensider about Blue's connection not mattering.

If were to get a defender it should be a left back. But its a striker and someone for the flanks that we need. Keane and Shawn Wright Philly??
AussieVilla
I really can't see the point in this when we have four quality CB's plus Delaney if need be. Would just frustrate the two youngsters I would of thought and then maybe lose them. We'd be better going for someone else in another position.
Tierney
We need a quality centre back whos better than mellberg (we need to strenthen our squad not weaken it!......New left back is a must aswell, Baines or Bridge would be ideal

Read that Bruce doesnt want to sell him, doesn't need to sell him, and that he'll be remaining at St Andrews. Of course Upson himself probably feels very differently, and has indeed made his 'want-out' feelings well known to Bruce and co. He'll be off, no doubt about that, and no doubt a return to London is very much on the cards.
