Paul Merson was an exceptional player. Shame we signed him late in his career, still in my opinion played his best football while at the Villa. I remember going to games where you simply ended up watching the Magic Man. Never been replaced and we would be hard pushed to find someone who could.

Yes, Paul was special. I'm glad to see Ian Taylor came in second, great player though he was, Merson was different class.

Even Magic Merson said he played his best Football at Villa. We should not of let him go and kept him on as part of the training team

The word 'legend' is used all too often to describe merely average performers, but in Merse's case its a title that is fully justified. Superb footballer.

Yes Deano Taylor was excellent, local boy done good, one of us, BUT Merse was in a different class before he came to the Villa, then when he did and there were all the grumbles about he is too old, he has just come here to play out his retirement for some decent wages, he proved what he was and set Villa Park alight. Legend is used a lot but in Merses case it doesnt say enough. UTV

Yet Taylor had that period when he was the target for the infamous VP boo-boys, Merse never suffered that humiliation.
