Confidence Crisis For Villa Strikers

Confidence Crisis For Villa Strikers

Martin O'Neill says Juan Pablo Angel needed the goal on Saturday against Portsmouth to give him some 'encouragement' as he has 'been lacking a bit of confidence'.

'Juan Pablo has played in all the games for us this season. Even on the bench I thought he could nick us a goal and that proved to be the case. Things have not been going for him and I think he just needed a goal and that will give him some encouragement. The last couple of games he looks to have been lacking a bit of confidence and the goal would have given him a decent boost.'

He also says that Milan Baros has been lacking in confidence but if the Czech Republic international striker can find his touch, he could be a major asset for Villa.

'I am sure when Milan plays at international level, his confidence is fine. It's just taking it into the normal league games. It's about having the confidence to perform. He has won a Champions League medal. I think it is about Milan having the confidence to think, 'I am going to go past these players' and regain that confidence that he had when he played in certain spells at Liverpool. Confidence is so important. If players have got a bit of talent, confidence is everything.'

Adding: 'I have not seen the best of Milan Baros yet and it might be a case that Aston Villa haven't seen the best of him for one reason or another. He has come from Liverpool on the back of having won the Champions League. He came here in preference to Lyon and Gerard Houllier. I am sure he would have expected too have made a greater impact here, just for himself as much as anything else and for one reason or another it hasn't happened. But there is time for him to do it. Hopefully, now in the foreseeable future, that might happen.'

'Milan Baros playing brilliantly would be an asset to us without a doubt. That goes without question.'

Come on guys, chin up, shooting boots on, score. Not that difficult! ;-)

I agree with Milan needing confidence, but the more I see of JPA the more I think his best days are behind him. He was never the quickest but this season he seems a yard off his already slow pace.

thats the thing with strikers, a few missed chances and they pile the pressure on themselves, we all know what these pair are capable of, the problem they have which they are more than aware of is the fact that their places are not guaranteed and come Jan who knows who will be competing for places, so no pressure chaps but it might be a good idea to start banging a few in. I'm sure Milan just needs a goal, but he looks like he couldn't care less. That's the most frustrating thing about him. It's a bit difficult to really criticise the strikers though, as the service hasn't been all that good. IMO Juan Pablo is our best striker. His link up play is excellent and even if he's not scoring, he still battles, wins the ball in the air, holds it up and links well with the midfield.

I think our midfielders are letting the strikers down, the link up play has been pretty woeful all season, which is why I still think we need Hendrie back, even if it is for a short term. Not only is he capable of scoring himself but he is a great provider for the front men.

agree jonah, the supply is woeful and the strikers are forever making runs that amount to nothing as the ball is never played to them.

The service to our central strikers, whatever pairing we seem to use, is often very poor. Thought Milan played o.k. on Saturday at Fratton Park, but of course we have every right to expect more from him than just o.k. The same can also be said of JPA. For whatever reason we just aren't threatening enough in the final third, and obviously that is a situation that has to be rectified. I feel that come the summer of 2007, if in fact not during the month of January, both MB and JPA could be heading for pastures new.

Glensider - agree with you there, i think in January 1 will go and by the summer both will have found new clubs.

On paper we have reasonable strikers at the club, but in reality they just aren't doing it, and its costing us dear.
