O'Neill On FA Cup Draw

O'Neill On FA Cup Draw

Martin O'Neill has admitted the FA Cup third round game against Manchester United at Old Trafford isn't the easiest game we could have asked for!

O'Neill continued about the game to be played on the weekend of January 6 and 7 (surely a guaranteed televised game?):

'There's always something special about the third round draw - a real buzz of expectancy. You can get paired with one of the minnows or a fellow Premiership side. On this occasion we've drawn the Premiership leaders and it is fair to say the draw could have been kinder to us!'

'But our approach will be positive and I'm confident we can go up there and give a good account of ourselves, with a view to progressing further in the competition. We've done well away from home this season and we'll need to produce something special up at Old Trafford to progress.'

I know some don't agree but I'm not sure we need to worry too much about the FA Cup this season, lets get top six in the league and qualify for the UEFA Cup (or dare we dream a little dream and aim higher with a few new arrivals in January?). That will make next summers spending spree far easier surely as most of the top players want European football and will only move to clubs who have that.

You're a tad unlucky, having visited Stamford Bridge in the League Cup and now due to visit Old Trafford in the FA Cup.

Great to here MON speaking about getting in the top 6 this season! Why not aim high? As for Utd... any chance of them fielding the kids?

every dog has his day, this could just be ours, no team is unbeatable. UTV

I'm assuming MON said 'next summers spending spree'. I get the impression that January might not be the signing bonanza we expect. Perhaps one or 2 to bolster the squad. After all most of the decent players will be wanted by their clubs until August. I can only think of a couple like Boa Morte of Fulham and Sidwell of Reading. Smith of Man U might be a loan signing though. Roll on January, UTV

Totally agree JP. Let's concentrate on the league and make sure we get into Europe. Whilst cup runs are always good, it's usually at the expense of the league form

how many more times do we have to face united in the 3rd round!? doubt they'll play the kids, Fergie will want this cup....3 times in 3 weeks we have to play them (not to mention Spurs and Chelski thrown in between thar), its going to be a tough Christmas

If we are going to win anything we have to take on every team, no matter what their rank or status. Given what has happened in previous years I think we have a better chance of beating MU this year than any cup opponents last year. We have every chance of winning, why moan?

The luck of the draw can kill your F.A. Cup dreams stone dead no matter what round you progress to. Yes, lets enjoy a decent run if we can, but concentrating on a top six premiership placing is a damn sight more sensible and realistic. The top four positions will no doubt be filled by everyone's pre-season picks, but after that, every team is much of a muchness, and the battle for a UEFA Cup placing is very open.

Its a one off match, lose and its not the end of the world but win and its a springboard for the rest of the season.
