Villa - Expectations

Expectations

I am sure I am not alone in saying that, with all that has happened at our beloved club over the last few months, I find I have to pinch myself to ensure that it isn't all a dream. It isn't a dream of course, its a wonderful reality. So, the question has to be then, what are our expectations?

'Sleeping Giants' is a much used cliché to describe Villa, it is also an extremely accurate one. The potential of our great club knows no bounds. With the right leadership, which it very much seems like we now have, our club can achieve anything.

It is amazing to think now that, unless you're in your early thirties, you can't remember the last time this club fulfilled its potential. The 1981 Championship, that glorious night in Rotterdam. Come to think of it, the years under Ron Saunders leading up to it were pretty good too. His team(s) played some great stuff. Who else can remember the night we beat Liverpool, Keegan, Souness et al, 5-1 at Villa Park? and that was the half-time score!!! (Gray 2, Deehan 2 & Cropley for Villa, Kennedy for Liverpool if my memory serves me well).

I live 'darn sarf' now and have a number of die-hard Arsenal supporters amongst my friends (I know, but what can you do) and have had many a 'discussion' with them about our respective teams. I maintain to them as I maintain here and now that there is NO bigger club, NO prouder club NO club with such history and tradition in English football than Aston Villa FC.

So, should we Villa fans set our sights high? Damn right we should!! Its not going to happen this season, or next and probably not the one after either, but, eventually, under the 'new regime' we can and will get there.

Have faith brothers, the revolution has begun.

Well put jonah. All it needs now if or to quit your job, forget your southern mates, dump the missus and move back home. Bring the kids and buy a load of season tickets for the Villa. vive la revolution.

jonah
Hmm, have just read what I just said, better clarify that I think, before I am in the dog house. I don't wish to dump the missus, but do wish I could move back to Brum..Phew, that was close!!
jonah
maybe your missus wants to dump you :)

Hello Jonah - as a nowadays 'darn sarf' person myself, I can click with you! I'm also one of those old 'uns who saw matches back in the early 50s, and experienced the issues of the 50s and 60s down at VP. Therefore, I say "all will come good". Though we have a right to expect the best at VP, the new regime will need a bit of time. It took Ron Saunders at least 2 years to get a really good side together, and 6 years before we truly were good enough for the championship. We'll get there...!

Interesting point was made on the radio last night: Regarding the 5 - 10 year plan of the current owners. Now i plan to support villa for a good deal longer than that, so what the hell is going to happen in 10 years time?

the_lergy: as i said i my article..damn right we will!!

If we are challenging for the Top 4 in 3 years time I would call that brilliant progress. Lets aim for the top tho, you never know.

We all knew it couldn't/wouldn't happen overnight. Tremendous strides have been made already. We're doing fine.

The season could well fizzle out, seeing us drop maybe into the bottom half. Lets remember though, that the rebilding work has only just begun. It will be no twelve month thing.
