Why Do Former Players Get Abuse?

Why Do Former Players Get Abuse?

Following my question as to why former players get such a poor reception when they return to Villa Park, voiceoftheholte posted this and I thought it deserved a wider audience:

This is something that I posted a couple of days ago. Most of it is a general thought on how we react to returning players, but it does go on to highlight the issue regarding Darius Vassell.

In short you must be brain-dead if you think he is the sort of player we should be giving stick to. Applauding ex players is not soft. Quite the opposite in fact. It shows a level of intelligence and decency that inbreds will not understand.

Gareth Southgate did not say he wanted to leave for a big club. He did say he wanted to leave for a club that was showing ambition because he had realised, as all the fans had years ago, that Villa were going nowhere apart from backwards under Ellis.

He came for £2.5 million and left for £6.5. He did nothing apart from criticise Ellis and make Villa £4 million. Since leaving he has never once criticised the club or the fans. He has only questioned the abilities of the former Chairman. In my eyes that makes him a pretty decent bloke.

You will also find that Villa players who were here with Southgate have nothing but praise for him, along with nearly everybody else in the game. It is only the small minded who think otherwise. Some players do deserve a bit of stick for the way they go about orchestrating their transfers. Nolberto Solano springs to mind. But the likes of Southgate, David James, Crouchy, ULDC amongst others do not.

It would be great if we became known as fair, sporting , knowledgeable fans. Unfortunately that will not happen whilst we have children at the back of the Holte shouting abuse at former players and brain dead sheep joining in.

No doubt on Wednesday the brain dead will start abusing Vassell. Not only a local lad but a Villa fan. He never asked for a transfer, and was sold for a pittance by the former manager (can't remember his name). Vassell was misquoted as saying he was glad of a transfer to a big club, but that is all it was, a press lie!

Lets grow up. Unless you are a teenager or a moron, surely people must realise that by shouting filth at former players makes you look stupid.

Nice one. Lets give Darius a big cheer and hopefully he'll repay the favour and miss a few sitters!

I do hope Darius doesn't get any abuse tonight. He was a victim of O'Leary and I am sure he never wanted to leave Villa in the first place. I don't think any player who left under the last few years of the Ellis regime can be blamed for doing so and that certainly includes Southgate and Boateng who both took some stick from the more moronic 'fans' amongst us on Saturday.

For the second time in as many months I find myself in complete agreement with VOTH. Good point, well made.

It'll be the same idiots constantly singing about Small Heath. Who cares what they are doing and how *****e they are? We should be concentrating on us, and in the same way we should concentrate on supporting our own players and not berating those that have left. When Southgate and Ehiogu left, they stated in public what every Villa fan had been saying so why they are abused is beyond me. And Vassell is one of us, so he should get the warm reception he deserves

So let me get this right, this is an article abusing your own fans for abusing other clubs players. How very odd and very hypocritical. I think you've got your knickers in a twist about a problem that doesn't really exist anyway.

Beefy, nicely sat on the fence. It would be more interesting to hear your opinion on the filth directed towards a great Villa captain (Southgate) of years gone by. Nobody has abused their own fans. in the original article or any of the replies. Others and myself think that you must be 'moronic' or an 'idiot' to shout filth at former good servants of our club. You either agree with this statement or not? Do you or don't you?

Think you have missed the point slightly beefy. As voth says, we are not abusing our own supporters, we are just trying to rectify a problem which makes all Villa fans look pathetic and small minded, by abusing people like Southgate, who gave the club relatively long and distinguished service and Vassell who is a self confessed Villa fan, even though he plays elsewhere

Beefy get a grip geezer, don't recall spotting any abuse aimed at out own fans, as pointed out by my fellow faithful, there is a hard core of idiots who are abusive to those that do not deserve it, and thats it in a nutshell, it doesn't matter if they gave many years of quality service (southgate) or if they bleed the colours (vassell) and then moved on for whatever reason, they deserve better. IMHO we have one of the most vocal and dedicated, proud fan bases around, and the idiots are making us look bad, O'Neils Claret and Blue Army have higher standards than that. UTV

Voice totally agree. Half the time it provokes a better performance from the ex-player. I was at the game v Boro a few years back and remember the abuse Ugo was given, next thing you know he has scored and every one dishin out stick looks a moron, it also happened when Walters scored against us for Liverpool. Same thing with Darius in his first season at City, bit of a theme I reckon? Agree with you also that some players deserve all they get, Dwight Yorke kissing that United badge springs to mind!!!!
