Gavin McCann Up For The Fight

Gavin McCann says he is up for the challenge if Martin O'Neill brings in more players during the January transfer window.

'That's happened throughout my career at Everton and Sunderland. Managers bring in new players for whatever reason and all you can do is go out there and do your best and not worry about the gaffer signing players in your position.'

He also says Villa are in a decent position midfield wise at the moment:

'We've certainly got a few options. Having started the season with three in midfield, I've now played in there with Gareth, Stan, Isaiah and Davo. And, although I was frustrated not to play because I was suspended last week, it was nice to see Davo come on and have such a good impact for the last 20 minutes at Wigan. You forget he's only young because he was one of the better players last season and it must have been hard for him playing week in, week out at the stage, with all the internationals as well.'

Adding on the official site: 'Isaiah played well at Everton the week before and did well again on Sunday, so the gaffer's got plenty of choices.'

McCann should return to the starting line up against Middlesbrough tomorrow.

We look and are indeed are a weaker side without Smilley, although it is great to see a number of youg lads coming through. I thought we lacked bigtime in midfield v Wiggan without Mc Cann and Petrov.

thats because Wigan kept launching the ball from back to front. It is hard to play football when the ball is 60 foot above you.
voiceoftheholte
Your right should of kept Crouch, but i think Petrov was a big miss witn no link between midfield and forewards. Why no M,boro fan this week?

The way Gavin is playing this season, he has no reason to be looking over his shoulder right now. All he has to do one would imagine is just to keep on doing exactly what he's doing. It would be difficult to believe that he has ever performed to his current heights previously in his career, even when at Sunderland and about to win his solitary England cap.

he is playing well at the moment but comptition is also a good thing to keep them sharp..............
ernshaw
Agree, he does need competition, quality competition at that.
