'If It's Football, It's Vital'

O'Neill Rests Chris Sutton

Martin O'Neill says he is 'very pleased' with striker Chris Sutton who bagged his first (of many we hope) goal against Everton last weekend.

O'Neill said of the 33-year-old former Celtic, Blackburn and Chelsea striker:

'I'm obviously very pleased with Sutton. I've given him a few days off because he's worked hard.'

'He's a good character and he's very conscientious. He's still enjoying it and at this stage of his career he's got to enjoy it, otherwise it would be a real waste of time. I know it's a short-term contract to the end of the season and he was absolutely adamant that if things didn't work out, he would just pack the bags and head off. But I always felt he definitely had a chance and he's doing well. He's giving it everything he's got.'

'He was out on his feet again at Everton and I am concerned in the last minutes of matches, where he's given everything and then he gets so tired that the muscles seize-up on him.'

He gives everything he's got for 90 minutes and you can't ask any more than that

I've been very impressed with him. I thought he was over the hill but he looks as good as he did all those years ago for Blackburn

All we ask is that any player gives 100%. If they do that we can have no complaints. If 100% effort doesn't equate to enough quality, then it is up to M'ON to make the changes. UTV

You deifnately cant complain if a player limps off the pitch withour being injured, thats commitment (Baros take heed)

He fully deserves any rest and recovery time that MON deems necessary. The guy has been a revelation up front, and its down to us to nurse him through the season, to ensure we enjoy the full benefit of his experience, ability, and attitude. What a surprise package he's proven to be.

You can't moan at anyone who doesn't put the effort in> hence I was slightly disappointed with some fans response to UDLC.

So far he is proving the doubters wrong, MON's judgement seems to be 100% spot on when it comes to player and their contribution.

De la Cruz may give 100% he just was not good enough, I cant remember him getting booed though.

tierney. You are spot on. We get back to the old problem about fans, who were obviously dropped on their head at birth, who think that by shouting abuse at a player when he makes a mistake, will make him improve. Ron Saunders used to ask for 110% in every game, if a player gives that, I do not care if he is crap. However if a crap player is continually picked it should be the manager who gets critisism (not abuse), not the player.

a brilliant player with great experiance...brings a lot to you...

I quite liked DLC. He wasn't the best, but you were guaranteed a fairly solid performance from him. Perhaps he might have done well if "supporters" weren't having a pop at him all the time
Geordie_Villa
Bizzar really, Sutton, a player who's attitude I was in serious doubt about, is looking more like a committed Villan than most of the team were last season, in fact more than most do now and this season we are getting some great efforts from the players. I just can't stop smiling!!!!!!!

Pity we didn't have the money to lure him here in his prime, oh and the ambition too.
