More O'Neill Post Match Reaction

Martin O'Neill has confirmed what most Villa fans in their heart of hearts know, we've got a very long way to go before we can compete with the top teams.

At least with the arrival of O'Neill, not to mention Randy Lerner and his merry men, we know we have a chance of getting back there, we are basically at the bottom of a very steep hill, whilst Ellis was in charge we went from the top and slid down, now we have the right people in place to push us back up there, and hopefully it won't take too long!

O'Neill said after the 4-0 defeat to Chelsea:

'You can gloss over certain things but we were beaten by a very fine side indeed who have been assembled at an incredible price. But they are there and they are in our league and you should not give up. You should go on and compete and that's what I want us to go on and do. That's what the team want to do and more importantly that's what the club wants to do. I don't want us to take 20 years to get up there, but that is what we are trying to do.'

'It's nights like that when I am pleased that we have 18 points on the board, because we have much work to dobut we know that.'

Having said all that, O'Neill was obviously disappointed with the way the team capitulated adding 'We came down here only a few weeks ago in the league and there is absolutely no reason why we couldn't have competed to the same level and to the same intensity as we did that day.'

Did Ellis have a free seat on a coach yesterday?

How refreshing to hear comments that us supporters can relate to. So much better than "it's a small squad, they are only young boys, I think that is about right for the budget that I have". And best of all, "If I can concentrate on not getting relegated I think we will all be happy". These are all comments from the previous manager (sorry I can't remember his name). UTV

Refreshing? Yes. Its also what we have known for years. When it comes to playing the 'bigger' teams we seem to lose on the way there. How many times can we say that over the past five years we have gone out against the bigger teams and looked as though we thought we could win? Its going to take longer than a couple of months to correct core beliefs.

a very open and honest appraisal of last night and life in general by O'Neill... but then again I would expect no less..having said that I would not expect many teams top put 4 past one of O'Neils sides.....

there's one for your krulak interview, what targets are being set? i heard the Sheff Wed manager talking about Brian Law being the new manager he said 'This year, get us playing good football, next year, get us into the play-offs and the one after we get promoted'. we must have something like that in place. it would be nice to hear what they are. other than that, we've lost twice since MON came in (not counting the pre-season friendlies) both away and both to champions league regulars. we'll get europe by may.UTV

Honest and to the point. What else can we the supporters ask for?

Things are looking brighter guys, Jan the 01st is only 52 days away :-), Randolph and Krulak will send in reinforcements. IF we get another 10-15 points on the board by then we will be in a strong position to push for top 6, i think our last 8 fixtures of the season are all winnable too. we can do it!

Seems to me, not having had my O'neill is God and can do no wrong pills today, that he's really saying we were beaten by a team that cost much more than we will ever spend, but as we showed earlier in the season we should have competed better than we did and that's really *****ed me off on the back of an awful away result at Liverpool too.

I love to hear an Honest manager comment on how it really is, well said MON, its a shame that a few of the other premiership managers can't be so honest!
