Before I reveal my dream I feel that there are a couple of things you ought to know about me that will put my DREAM into perspective.
Firstly, I'm not a football supporter (just as well, I hear some of you say judging on the Villa performances of the last four or five seasons).
I'M A VILLA SUPPORTER.
I watch very little, if any, other football apart from Villa and England. I'm just not interested in any other teams (although I will confess to being riveted to the TV when watching small heath loose 7-0 to Liverpool last season. It was the best comedy program on the tele for years!!)
I go down to Villa Park to see Villa win. I don't care if we play crap and score five minutes into injury time to win 1-0 as long as we win (although if we play well and demolish the opposition it makes it better). If Villa win I'm as happy as Larry.
If we draw I'm not happy but a point is a point and at least we haven't lost (the exception to this was when small heath equalized in injury time a few seasons ago. I was gutted!)
If we lose...........well that spoils my day, even week-end. NEXT DOOR'S CAT BETTER WATCH OUT!!!!!!!!
I think this just about sums up how I feel about supporting the Villa.
Now onto my DREAM.
Some supporters dream about winning the Champions League.
Some dream about winning the Premiership.
Some dream about winning the F.A. Cup again.
And whilst I would also like to see us win all of the above......
What I dream about is.............................................
NOT SEEING VILLA LOSE AT HOME ALL SEASON!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The dream is not even about seeing Villa win every match at home (although that would be fantastic) it's just about NOT LOSING at HOME.
Not even the championship winning side of '81 managed to avoid defeat at home in that glorious season.
Strangely enough the nearest I recall us being to achieving this feat was in the much maligned Jo Venglos season of 90-91 when we did not actually loose at home in the league until March the 9th (although it was to Luton Town 1-2). Granted there were a lot of draws at home that season, but it wasn't until March that next door's cat had to hide! These were the days when Man Ure, Arsenal and Liverpool did not regularly turn up at Villa Park and go home with three points. The days when Chelsea weren't even as good as us and Newcastle weren't even in the same league.
I must admit that my dream isn't new. I first had it when I was quite young and impressionable and a certain Mr. Docherty was appointed our manager and I thought Villa would then be invincible (how wrong can you be?). I've had the dream a few times since, namely when Ron Saunders was manager. Then Ron Atkinson followed by Brian Little. I think I may even have had the dream briefly when Gregory was in charge but now that Martin O'Neill has been appointed the dream could well become a reality!!
Well there you are. That's my dream. Please don't laugh out too loud because I don't want to wake up just yet!!!!!!!!!!!
