O'Neill Close To Midfielder Deal

Martin O'Neill says Villa are getting closer to tying up 18-year-old midfielder Isaiah Osbourne to a new long term deal.

Osbourne, who made his first Premiership start in a baptism of fire at Anfield on Saturday has impressed the new manager who told the official site:

'I have been making inroads with his agent and we are hoping to tie that down. The agent has spoken very, very positively about Isaiah wanting to stay and I don't see why not because this is exactly what he wants. He can see and the young lads can see that they will get a chance to play.'

Adding: 'What a week for him! He came on against Fulham, then played the two games- his full debut against Leicester. He played a lot of the game, hadn't an ounce of energy left in his body. 'I thought he was getting tired against Liverpool but he didn't do too badly considering what he was up against. He will improve.'

Osbourne has already said he is modelling himself on Patrick Vieira, which if he succeeds will more than do for Villa!

I'd prefer it if he compared himself to a true legend like Ian Taylor rather than a French pansy! :) That said he looks like a hell of a prospect!

I'm a big fan of his, and I reckon this is great news. Will probably overtake Gavin McCann at some point, and could potentially save us a lot if money in the transfer market. The good news just keeps coming!

Good to hear that MON has acted so quickly in preparing a new deal for the youngster, that has to be a tremendous boost for the lad. His may well be a relatively new name to a lot of us, but he's certainly shown considerable promise in his appearances to date. Hope he goes from strength to strength.

Yep nice to see things moving quickly on this front, tie the guy up he looks a good prospect to me.... Is he a local lad ?

Yes, according to my little copy of the AV Yearbook 2006-07, Isiah Osbourne was born here in dear old Brum, November 5th, 1987. Which means of course that he'll be the 'Birthday Boy' on Sunday when we entertain Robbie Savage and co.

He'll be a good signing if we can tie him down. Plenty to learn, but he looks the part. Just needs some games under his belt.
