January - To Buy Or Not To Buy?

January - To Buy Or Not To Buy?

Martin O'Neill has hinted that he is looking to re-enforce the squad in January but also questions whether the winter transfer window is the best time to add to the team.

He told Sky Sports:

'I think we know if we can try and keep going until January, there is every possibility that we should be able to do something in terms of signings. I am hoping we will be able to do something. We had the possibility of young Milner coming in and nothing has changed much since then so I assume that money is still available.'

Before questioning 'But in any case is January the best time to try and improve your team? Some of the players you might want might still be involved in European football with their clubs and won't be available.'

Best to raid Chelsea, they have 982 players in their squad having bought the majority of players available world wide (he says in bitch mode). Surprised we've not been linked to David Beckham yet, his contract talks with Real Madrid don't seem to be going well!

Seems to me that this talk of 'best time to buy' may be a way of dampening the inevitable speculation that Randy Lerner will open his large wallet. Fact is the squad is too small at present and a few new faces are needed. May not be the big names that many will expect though, but looking back over the years, many of our best buys were low price players anyway - Delaney, Platt, McGrath, Teale, and so it goes on. The more expensive players were often the main disappointments.

No one has convinced me there is any money available yet, especially as this new sponsorship hasn't been sorted I know money was promised as part of the takeover, I know O'Neill has questioned its availability a few times too. That said he can't sensibly not go looking for a few gems he can turn into 'stars' I'd think

Getting linked with every player who will shortly be out of contract is going to get tiresome, can admins only allow posts from/about players linked through the official website? I hope so...........

i think MONs right, if we really do want some big name players its unlikley that their clubs will let them go mid campaign. We dont need many, a big money striker and a left winger (to play in Moores postion)would be my wish list.

We will definitely need to strengthen come January. The squad is dangerously small, and how long can the current players continue to perform above expectations? Remember this squad of players almost took us down last season.
