'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Flying Eagles For Flying Striker?

19-year-old Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor says he has heard nothing regarding reports linking him to a Nigerian international call up and says he is focussed on Villa.

He told the official site, amidst growing speculation that the 'Flying Eagles' are interested in him, 'I've not heard anything from them - I just know someone from the Nigerian FA was quoted in the papers over there. It's not out of the question in the long term, but at the moment I'm just concentrating on my football here at Villa. Things have been going well so far this season and I want to play as many Premiership games as possible this season. I don't want any distractions at the moment.'

Adding: 'It feels nice that people are talking about me - not just here, but over in Nigeria as well - but I won't be getting carried away. I could play for Nigeria because of my dad, but I could also play for England and I've already played at youth level up to the Under-20s. I've always wanted to play for England seniors and I suppose the Under-21s would be the next step for me. But I wouldn't completely rule out Nigeria in the long term.'

Don't think he's ever going to make the England squad but playing for Nigeria is a bad choice. If he is going to sod off for months on end for the African Nations Cup he can forget getting his game for us. Hopefully he means what he says and is going to keep focused on the Villa.

There is that problem of playing for an African country and missing vital games. Still has time to make a decision though.

After today's performance McLaren should surely be watching him with a view to at least trying him out in a friendly or the U21 side. It's 2.10 AM in Brisbane, just stayed up to watch Villa beat Charlton. Apart from a few worrying slips at the back I was most impressed. Martin O'Neill - whatever you're doing, keep on doing it ! And well played lads ! UP THE VILLA !! Time for beer :o)

Thought he had his best game in the first team today, even better than his debut performance at Goodison last season. He was lively throughout, and certainly made me rethink my criticisms. Took his goal very well, following a superb ball in from the skipper. Should think an under 21 call up is on the cards, both for him and for Luke. He needs to certainly distance himself from the Nigeria talk right now. As he says, he needs to be concentrating on the Villa.
