The Thomas Sorensen Debate

The Thomas Sorensen Debate

Vital Villa asked what Villa would do against Scunthorpe.

70% got it bang on the money predicted a win against Scunthorpe.

27% predicted a rout and thought we'd thrash them - obviously not accounting for the crossbar which we hit about 332222 times last night, well, ok 3-4 but give me some license!

2% thought we'd lose to Scunny and 1% said a draw.

The latest poll was suggested by EquatorialVilla who wanted to know if we should swap Thomas Sorensen for Stuart Taylor. There seems to be a few doubts about Sorensen amongst fans but I must admit, I'm not sure about changing him last week against Watford he kept us in the game with some world class saves.

Here are just a few comments after last nights cup game:

I thought Sorensen made some excellent saves again, but he is also prone to some basic mistakes. I personally think he is a weakness in the side. Donzarra.

I always feel sorry for keepers, they can make a string of excellent saves, but if they make one mistake in the match, concede a goal, everybody is on his back. Is there a single keeper in the world who never makes mistakes? Saurat

Sorenson is an excellent shot stopper, shame he lacks conviction in everything else. His distribution and judging crosses has been poor for a over a year now, I think its time for Taylor to have a go. Even though Tommo pulled off some fabulous saves last night he could have easily cost us the game, he reminds me of David James at times which is not a good thing. Full credit to Scunny they cut holes in us a few times last night. son_of_cher

I agree Sorenson made some excellent saves but let's not forget many of them were rebounds from his awful mistakes. He was appalling on crosses - which he always is - and, like James, a big mistake is always just around the corner Steve W

Agreed Sorensen had an iffy game, but he has been pretty good this season up until now particularly in last Saturday's game. Although Angel scored twice, he did miss a shed load of chances and with Baros hardly looking that great from the bench I would suggest that a centre forward may be high up the manager's shopping list. andrew144

Agree with Steve W. Sorensen looks world class one week and then the next he seems prone to losing concentration. Last night he created needless pressure on the defence by making poor decisions and poor clearances. Was disappointed with Baros too. He looks a long way from being match-fit and he was a yard too slow all the time. He also look completely un-interested in getting involved. DougInABox

I voted to change Sorensen in the recent poll, he has allot of qualities but he's far too inconsistent. I agree Taylor should be given a go and if by January we still don't have someone who looks steady then we should buy. we really haven't had an outstanding keeper since Bossier, Schmeichel was past it when he arrived, and Enkleman.....don't get me started! bobbyfett

He's in great form, he needs to be consistent if we're hitting the January Sales though.

Has anyone seen anything of Taylor in reserve games etc. to make them think that he would be an adequate replacement for Sorensen? I seem to remember Taylor playing a few first team games last season (man City away was at least one of them) but i dont recall him doing anything particularly memorable.

I'd keep Sorensen in, keepers always have dodgy parts to their game or in games and it is just shown up more. Some of his saves prove he is world class and I'm not convinced we have better waiting to replace him yet?

What is there to debate ? He's in fine form. Apart from mis-kicking a greasy ball against West Ham, he's been mistake-free.

He has given away two goal scoring opportunities from his kicking which could have given our last two games different results. Having said that his a great shot stopper etc etc. Why dont we play to our strengths and not give him pass backs if possible. I still think he is not the highest priority replacement as luke and gabby are very young and could do with a more experienced head to rotate with in the wide positions (e.g. milner or other). Mcann needs competition in the holding role (real competition not djemba family). Sorenson looks like he has no confidence at the moment so maybe he just needs a few impressive performances to get back to his best.

Can somebody please explain to me why EVERYTIME Sorenson makes a mistake he goes absolutely ballistic at someone in the defence - and the majority of the time it seems to be Mellberg he goes for. He was going mental about 6/7 times last night...the only thing I will say in his favour is he has kept us in games this season with outstanding saves but equally so he has made some howlers -that left footed attempt at a clearances v West ham in particular...luckily he hasnt cost us...yet. My dad doesnt support Villa but says Sorenson makes him nervous - think I know where he is coming from

When Taylor stood in for Sorensen a few times last season he was poor. I dont think taylor is good enough for villa as number 1. World class goalkeepers are very hard to come by so i would stay with sorensen until we find such a keeper, however i really think that our scouting system should be improved now we have new management and owners. Have we appointed a chief scout yet..?

why change a formula thats improving.seems to me that people are now looking for things to moan about rather than enjoying the moment.im sure that if required the manager will improve the team in ALL areas which will be needed if we are to compete with the big boys.

deemz, according to the "who's who" on the official site, our chief scout is called Ian Storey-Moore. Have to say that I know nothing about him. Can anyone shed any light?

I agree with deemz, don't think Taylor is a good enough replacement - but do think we need to replace sorensen in January, not sure what top quality keepers will be available though....
