Barry To 'Cap' Off Villa Form

Gareth Barry is again looking to add to his international caps and believes Martin O'Neill will give him a better chance of doing so.

Villa's captain told the official site: 'Martin thinks I can improve as a player. It's been frustrating over the last couple of years because there's so many good players around. Eriksson chose not to go with me but the new manager has new opinions. If that means calling me up then so be it, but I've got a better chance with Martin O'Neill being the manager here and Steve McClaren at England.'

'I started the first three games in midfield but this was my first game at left-back. People say the versatility can work against you but sometimes it works in your favour. I just want to show the manager what I can do in either position.'

O'Neill, who should have been but thank God wasn't named the new England boss (thank God for us Lions that is) said; 'The last thing I want to do, having failed interviews for that job, is to tell other people how to do it! Steve McClaren will have enough people telling him who is good and who isn't. He will find it out for himself. Gareth has got the ability but Aston Villa will have to be doing well enough. There is no point Barry playing well in a poor side. Villa will have to do well to get some attention. But he has been fantastic.'

Barry 4 England! I dont honestly feel he will make the regular first 11, but he should be in the squad for his LB or LM cover.

He certainly has the quality. Probably his biggest problem is that we still don't know his best position. If he can make left wing his own then he has a great chance of playing for England. At left back or centre mid then probably not.
ooahPaulMcGrath
agreed, left mid is where England are short, always thought barry was awesome as the left of a back three but at the moment he appears able to play - and play well - anywhere!
The Fear
Barry doesn't give the ball away quick enough for McClaren's liking

Barry is quality on the left the only thing really that goes against him at LB or LMf is lack of pace.
fatloser
If anyone can make him into an international class player it's MON.
sandgroanun
Why are people so concerned about pace and not his overall qualities?
myleftfoot
Exactly myleftfoot. The great Bobby Moore lacked pace, but what he lacked in pace he made up with class. Gareth is playing out of his skin, and is deserving of another England call up.

Love MON's line about having failed interviews for the England job! I always liked this guy, but he continues to impress.
Beovilla
Agreed myleftfoot, Teddy Sheringham was never a pacey player but he was quick in the mind and great in the skills. Barry doesn't have to be supersonic to be a great player.
The Fear
Great to see someone who will laugh at themselves with a one liner isn't it Beovilla!? The man is quality, think he's set to be a Villa legend.
