Olof Mellberg Is Not The Messiah

Mellberg is not the messiah, he is a very naughty boy!

Olof Mellberg was disgracefully sent home by Sweden coach after breaking a curfew and celebrating his 29th birthday.

HEY Lars, don't you mess with the 'bearded one'!

Defender Mellberg, striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and midfielder Christian Wilhelmsson were sent home before the Euro 2008 qualifier against Liechtenstein. Wonder if the same action would have been taken if they were facing a real footballing power?! Still, will give Olof time to rest before the weekends clash against West Ham.

A statement from the Swedish FA (SvFF) read: 'The national team have decided to send home three players, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Olof Mellberg and Christian Wilhelmsson, from the training camp in Gothenburg.

On Sunday the players were given some free time during the afternoon and evening, agreeing to meet again at the hotel at 23.00. The majority of players returned in time but three players stayed out until around 1.15. According to the team's management, the trio broke the agreed curfew and have therefore decided the three players will leave the national team in Gothenburg.'

Even footballers are allowed to celebrate their birthday !!
sak0101
so what he can enjoy like the rest of us at least he wont get injured
samtozer
well unless he falls off a bar stool in his local !! :-)

I'm sorry - I think this is a disgrace. You can have birthdays every year but you can't play for your country all the time. I play football three times a week. On Saturday night's I have often refused the yearnings of hot women wanting me back at their place because I have a duty to perform on the pitch before anything else. It's a case of where your priorities lie and Mellbergs appear not to be with football.

Maybe when his birthday comes round he is stuck at home with the wife and kids. This year he's with the swedish boys and just thought 'to hell with it'
sak0101
I'm not that bothered because he was away with Sweden. But then again, what would we be saying if we had qualified for the UEFA cup and been drawn against some minnows and he had done this? He's a senior pro and really should know better.

On the official site it stipulates that none of them had consumed any alchohol, so if that is true, what a ******* ridiculous decision. If they had been out on the town having a few beers I could understand it and in fact agree but as it was they just wanted to have a sober celebration of their former captains birthday. ******* silly but great for Villa, keep him fresh and injury free.

Just to note, I did not put all those *s in my post, it was done by the site, I wrote "*******" ;o)

hist ya heathen, you'll be saying O'neill is no good next

Very un-Olof like. Obviously being free from the restraints of captaincy both at country and club level have allowed him the opportunity to down a few with the lads. Dont worry about it oh bearded/non-bearded one. Just keep Marlon Harewood in your back pocket this time out, and we'll say no more about it.
glensider
just because they were going out to night clubs doesnt mean that they were going to get p*ssed. I dont know what happened but this is a bit harsh.
swanzboichris
If it was an agreed curfew, then birthday celebration or not, they should be sent home.
sandgroanun
sandgroanun, you're right. But this is Melly. We all love him and we don't care about Sweden so of course we are going to back him.

Blasphemy !!!!! oh you dissenters and detractors from the truth, it is plain to see that Mellberg is the messiah, have you not seen him walk and even run on water (logged pitch), and smite down his enemies with a nod of his head (arsenal) forever earning himself a place in the history books, his birthday should be a national holiday, I’m Mellberg, no I’m Mellberg, I’m Mellberg and so’s my wife. UP THE MELLBERG (and the VILLA)
steff_the_villan
He is clearly suffering from beard withdrawal dissorder (BWD) its not his fault - he is ill!
tylervilla
the Mellberg wallpaper on avfc.co.uk shows the great one after scoring at the emirates, just how much do you think it meant to him, UTV

lmfao Cpt. Mainwaring, great stuff ;o) I think it's petty in the extreme, so he was out for another couple of hours - woo frickin hoo ! It was his birthday FFS ! Was he strapped to a dentists chair with Ibrahimovic pouring bottles of voddy down his throat ? I doubt it somehow ! Wonder if he'd have been sent home had the Swedes been playing England ?
