Stilian Petrov, A Villa Bargain

Former Celtic captain Jackie McNamara, who is now at Wolverhampton Wanderers, says that the transfer of Stilian Petrov was the bargain of the summer.

The fee was undisclosed but is thought to be in the region of 6million + up to 2million in add ons.

McNamara said:

'Paying out 6.5million is a lot of money when you look at some of the prices paid out for midfielders. Perhaps that kind of money shows how highly he is rated at both Celtic and Villa. Villa will be hoping it's a bargain and there's every chance it will be if he shows the skills and scores the goals like he did at Celtic. He will do well for the team. He's got people around him who know him well in Martin O'Neill, John Robertson and Steve Walford. I think he'll enjoy playing in the Premiership.'

Adding: 'He's wanted to go and play there for a long time and now he has got his wish. I think he'll thrive at Villa because it is what he has wanted. He's one of the best goalscoring midfielders out there. If Villa wonder what they are getting, then he's probably similar to Frank Lampard. Lampard always seems to be in there and that's how it is with Stilian.'

Similar to Frank Lampard? Blimey, high praise indeed (unless we are talking about the international performances obviously!)

Looks like it will be Davis's place under direct threat from Stan's arrival then. Don't think it will do Davis any harm to have a little bit of a breather tho. He can only learn off players like Petrov.
DeanoVilla
If united payed 18 million for carrick then petrov is a snip!!
samtozer
LOL SNIP PETROV IS NOT IN THE SAME LEAG AS CARRICK LET ALONE SCOTTY PARKER HE'S ONLY PLAYED IN THE SCOTTISH LEAG AND THAT AIN'T A HARD LEAG IN ALL FAIRNES I MEAN IS THAT UR NEW QUALITY SIGNIN THEIR IF IT IS F*** ME U AIN'T GOING NOWHERE WITH PLAYERS LIKE THAT IN YA SIDE
geordie boys
Oh dear. I see the idiots have been here as well. Anyway, ignoring that. I think Petrov should be replacing McCann more than Davis, but any competition for places is good, considering last season we barely had any squad players, only first 11.

As a Geordie, you'll have a Masters degree in going nowhere. Stan is the man. He'll be missed at Celtic. You know how Celtic fans are always asking - can we play in the Premiership? Let's turn it on its head - Newcastle might just pip Rankers to third place in the SPL. If there is one lesson any new chairman can learn from the Geordies, it's watch how you spend your money and you should end up with at least one more trophy than Newcastle have won in the past, oh XX years.
malcy
hey gerdie boy fu** off back to your little **** hole you wan*er, parker is an overratet pile of crap just like carrick you dick
samtozer
GEORDIE BOYS how the **** you can come on the villa site preaching about us going nowhere is beyond me, go and check your honours list it wont take long, then check ours, you say we're going nowhere, where exactly have you been? no ****ing where!! oh and while we're here what was it 2-0, without petrov. you really are a tool
eltoro
well said eltoro
samtozer
i beg to differ ELTORO, tools generally have a use. if we ignore him, he'll go away. he obviously hasn't properly licked his wounds since he came over here announcing that they were going to beat us. and now feels like he has to justify his existence by commenting on every topic on this site, i think he's swaying, he wants to be a villa fan. he's probably at the point where he's covered his pc keyboard in clingfilm to stop the salty tears of defeat from short circuiting his computer. there, there geordie boy pull yourself together, the only real defeat in losing is being bitter. you big girl.

Back to the subject, I hope he turns out to be a brilliant aqusition for us and hopefully take some of the pressure off young Davis.
Tierney
A snip at 6m+? We will see, but MON knows how to get the best out of him.
sandgroanun
He wil take a bit to settle in to the squad and adjust to the pace of the prem.Dont think he will start against the hammers in fact saurat think your poll should include gabby funny feeling he is going to get off the mark.
sk1nner80
Looking forward to seeing him play at Upton Park this coming Sunday. At kick off time all the talking and hype will stop, and we'll get some kind of idea as to the player we've bought.
glensider
So he cant convert penalties for his national side? Seriously though, we paid good money for him, but regardless of that he the expectations are high and im sure he will make us all happy
AussieVilla
Scott Parker? I enjoy watching him fighting to get the ball under control. Great goalscoring record too. Petrov must have played in that same Scottish league as Boumsong and Craig Moore. They're good!
Steve W
What A PILE OF ***** FOR 7 MILLION, VILLA ARE GOING NOWHERE!! HE IS THE ONLY PLAYER THAT WOULD GO TO YOU! AND THATS OFFICIAL!!
cockeril
Oh happy days! I love the fact people are now feeling the need to slag us off, it shows we are on the up and they are afraid!
DeanoVilla
Strange how the braindead who slag Villa off CAN ONLY TYPE WITH THE CAPS LOCK ON
Steve W
Wow. The idiots are angry. Settle down boys, your wet nurse is on her way.
The Usual Suspect
they're getting nervous that they wont even make it to the intertoto this season. happy with your 3 points are you?
bobbyfett
Lampard? Don't be silly. He's far better. Makes Ronaldinho look like sunday League.
