Stilian Petrov, A Villa Bargain

Stilian Petrov, A Villa Bargain

Former Celtic captain Jackie McNamara, who is now at Wolverhampton Wanderers, says that the transfer of Stilian Petrov was the bargain of the summer.

The fee was undisclosed but is thought to be in the region of £6million + up to £2million in add ons.

McNamara said:

'Paying out £6.5million is a lot of money when you look at some of the prices paid out for midfielders. Perhaps that kind of money shows how highly he is rated at both Celtic and Villa. Villa will be hoping it's a bargain and there's every chance it will be if he shows the skills and scores the goals like he did at Celtic. He will do well for the team. He's got people around him who know him well in Martin O'Neill, John Robertson and Steve Walford. I think he'll enjoy playing in the Premiership.'

Adding: 'He's wanted to go and play there for a long time and now he has got his wish. I think he'll thrive at Villa because it is what he has wanted. He's one of the best goalscoring midfielders out there. If Villa wonder what they are getting, then he's probably similar to Frank Lampard. Lampard always seems to be in there and that's how it is with Stilian.'

Similar to Frank Lampard? Blimey, high praise indeed (unless we are talking about the international performances obviously!)

Looks like it will be Davis's place under direct threat from Stan's arrival then. Don't think it will do Davis any harm to have a little bit of a breather tho. He can only learn off players like Petrov.

Oh dear. I see the idiots have been here as well. Anyway, ignoring that. I think Petrov should be replacing McCann more than Davis, but any competition for places is good, considering last season we barely had any squad players, only first 11.

As a Geordie, you'll have a Masters degree in going nowhere. Stan is the man. He'll be missed at Celtic. You know how Celtic fans are always asking - can we play in the Premiership? Let's turn it on its head - Newcastle might just pip Rankers to third place in the SPL. If there is one lesson any new chairman can learn from the Geordies, it's watch how you spend your money and you should end up with at least one more trophy than Newcastle have won in the past, oh XX years.

i beg to differ ELTORO, tools generally have a use. if we ignore him, he'll go away. he obviously hasn't properly licked his wounds since he came over here announcing that they were going to beat us. and now feels like he has to justify his existence by commenting on every topic on this site, i think he's swaying, he wants to be a villa fan. he's probably at the point where he's covered his pc keyboard in clingfilm to stop the salty tears of defeat from short circuiting his computer. there, there geordie boy pull yourself together, the only real defeat in losing is being bitter. you big girl.

Back to the subject, I hope he turns out to be a brilliant aqusition for us and hopefully take some of the pressure off young Davis.
