O'Neill Gets His First Villa Signing

Aston Villa have just confirmed that midfield playmaker - arguably our first since Paul Merson - has become Martin O'Neill's first signing.

The 27-year-old Bulgarian international has signed a four-year-deal. The fee is 'undisclosed' although reports suggest it is in the region of 6million + add ons.

This is all great and very happy to get Petrov as we certainly need some creativity in midfield but quite surprised that all the other transfer talk is of more forwards and midfielders but no propective defender transfer targets. Our present defence seems to be a little injury prone which definately exposed us last year.

Why would we need a new defender? Laursen, Delaney and Bouma will be back soon. and TeddyLyon... We're definately going to sign a new forward, why else did he let Kevin Phillips leave? this si the best summer :)

The truth is not many Villa fans know how good Petrov is. What we do know is that we trust Aston Martin to get it right. I don't think we ever trusted DOL in this way. Exciting times.

sorry melbourne holte end but can we just enjoy the moment please. New owner, new manager (best in the land) and finally, new players. It feels good to be a villain.

ok, yes we seem to have numbers in defence, theres also "wonder goal" Cahill but all of those 3 you mention missed a lot of games last year through injury. i really hope that Laursen finally gets to prove to us what he can do but not many come back after missing 2 years through injury - i really hope he proves me wrong. I'd like to see a new forward and a right sided defender who can also play in the centre of defence.

About damn time i say, and a good player to start a flurry of quality players to come to the Villa, obviously not in this transfer window but Januray and beyond. I just hope we dont become a Chelski-like team, or an Arsenal like team, the team that fielded not one english player. A few quality fix ups here and there and we'll still be good old, but mighty improved Aston Villa. It begins

Quality signing, very happy - a midfielder with flair and creativity, should be there for the Hammers game too. Now FOR Saviola and maybe a defender or two for cover, and we're in goooood shape. UP THE VILLA !!!

going out to aussievilla. MON is too smart a manager to let us become chelski-like, so it seems Lerner also. it will be solid i reckon without the ego. rough diamonds. up the villa!

Villa have a long way to go before we become Chelski, Arsenal, Utd and Liverpool. This is one signing and a great one dont get me wrong but lets at least 4 or 5 more Internationals before we start these comparisons.

I hope MON realises how good Cahill is. I was really worried last season that he'd get snapped up - Duck Egg only plyed him because there were no other option. IMHO he's one of the best players I've seen down Villa park. Seen this posted on the Teamtalk web site: Sentra (Manchester United fan): "...Martin O'Neill is really demonstrating he is EPL Top Recruit of Summer'06, for the impact and influence that he has imposed on the team he joined is far greater than other big names like Shevchenko, Ballack, etc. The managerial skill to transform the exact inheritated same team to grind 7 pts from the first 3 matches, his courage in fielding youngster Agbonlahor & Moore from the start, the persuassiveness to tie up Barry in longterm-deal, etc -- simply qualities of Top Manager! I have great respect of this man...."

Delighted with the signing. I think he's what we need, someone who can get their quota of goals from midfield and be creative. I agree with you Tarzan about Cahill but Ridgewell has been faultless so far (and I was never a fan of his). Competition is good in that area and Delaney also looked good when he played there too last season. I think another striker now would be good and then we're ok for a bit I think.

i hope we get a winger as we dont have a genuine one with pace i.e. never replaced milner and if we are going to climb the table in earnest we need a better holding player as mcann is not good enough to challenge for Europe.

I think Agathe will provide us with more than adequate cover in the short term at full, he is strong, progressive and pacey. I've always been a bit indifferent to Delaney, perhaps because he's always been injured, been wanting way after one or two good games, wanting a new contact after very short run in the side and also been the best of a bad lot (DLC & Samule spring to mind). Delaney, Samuel, Hendrie, Davies, Ridgewell (who's been great this season) even Baros. Need to step up or ship out in my opimion, let your football do the talking lads - go out and play

With Bouma injury prone has everyone forgotten Samuel is the only cover for a left back. Barry doesn't want to play there. Yes we need a 4th striker because if Angel or Moore gets injured we're stuffed. Also need a right winger to help Gabby. How things change that no one has suggested we sign Milner?

Congratulations to Aston Villa. The best piece of business your club has done for years and years is to get Martin O'Neill. With some money to spend he will move your club to regular contenders for everything, probably even the Boat Race. Petrov will energise the team and as soon as your takeover is done and a transfer budget is available O'Neill will acquire good value players who will play for the shirt. I can say that with some authority given I follow Celtic and watched what he did to my team. He man-managed players into raising their game time after time to outplay, Liverpool, Blackburn, Stuttgart, Barcelona, Juventus etc. Villa fans you will see the start this season and really enjoy season 2, 3 and so on.

we'll never be another chelski, lerner does'nt have the cash, he also wants to run the villa as a business, roman treats chelsea like an expensive girlfriend, splashing out (no jokes!) on overpriced players, at some point though the wallet will close and chelsea will have to sell to buy. they will also need to win the quadruple for the next ten years to recoup the money they have spent. i also dont think mourinho will stick around if they dont win the champions league this or next year. if we can hold a top 6 position until january villa will be an exiting prospect for the stamford bridge bench warmers. SWP in claret and blue anyone?

Bit harsh on the two young lads Davis and Ridgewell Tarzan. They are improving at a very advanced rate.Only early 20's and have probably already got 100 first team appearances between them.Hendrie and Samuel have both given a good account of them selfs and if asked to play will both bust a gut for the shirt dont think they wil be regulars so if they want more 1st team games then yes move them on if not keep hold.Im as excited as every one at our new investor and excellent manager but think this dam window isto early for us to benifit fully right now and with a small squad we just need to assess replcements for our weak areas between now and Jan.The money we have now aint going to disappear between now and then unlike it would have were deadly still heaad honcho.Up the villa

I didn't mean to sound harsh. I think the youngsters should be bedded in gradually and not expected to play like world beaters week in week out (Davies by his own admission hasn't been fully match fit). The young guns kept us up (just) last season. Its a very odd situation for us Villa fans, we now have decent manager/owner and are potentially bringing in high quality players who are going to create competition for places, that can only be a good thing. I can't get my get my head round this at the moment though - for example bring in a SWP or Saviola, they ARE better than what we currently haveand would improve our side, that is a fact. In the very recent past, we've been scraping the barrel with the DJ twins, Phillips, Berson & Bakke on loan!
