Demandi launches 'The Football Premier League and Championship Survey 2006/07'
The Premier League has kicked off and once again Chelsea FC is the heavy favourite. After having signed superstars like Andrei Shevchenko and Michael Ballack, Chelsea is eyeing a third successive Premier League title.
This has lead to discussions, as to whether or not salary caps should be introduced, to prevent single clubs from dominating the Premier League. But what do the fans think about this: Should salary caps be introduced to the Premier League?
To answer this and other questions, the Online Opinion Portal demandi has started 'The Premier League Survey 2006-07.
demandi is aiming to find out what fans think about controversial football questions. Should players be sent off for diving? Should referees be allowed to use video evidence?
Moreover, demandi asks football fans to rate their club and to predict the outcome of the Premier League Season 2006/07. Who will be the new Premier League champion? What position do the fans expect their club to reach this season? Which teams will be relegated? Who is going to be the Premier League“s Top Scorer: Thierry Henry, Wayne Rooney or...?

I would say yes, how much? £60k. Even this amount is obscene for some bloke to kick a pigs bladder about but if it was lower I think we would lose a lot of players to European teams.

The only way a salary cap can work is for it to be global, otherwise the best talent will go to play in those leagues that don't have one.

its a good point, only teams like chelsea would offer bigger bonuses to players, which the league cant control, or bigger signing on fees. i'm afraid money always wins. lucky we got us a billionaire really !!

The trouble with salary caps is that it leads to an incredible high turn over of players as clubs try to remain under the cap. Rorting the system then becomes an issue with clubs desperate to hold on to their best players. Loyalty to clubs (whats left of it) goes out of the window as players sign for one and two year contracts. Whilst no club can truely dominate (aka Chelsea etc etc) the league under a system like this I believe there has to be soe natural attrition. I would support the reintroduction on the limit of 'foreign' players allowed on the field at any one time but this would have to be a FIFA wide regulation. I think this would be more affective than a salary cap system that only really work for small competitions like rugby league.

No to salary caps. No matter what or how we feel about 'obscene' salaries that us mere mortals can only drool over, clubs should be allowed to pay the going rate, and players demand the wages that they deem their talents deserve.

Salary caps yes. Lets go back to the 60's when Jimmy Hill was the main player in getting rid of the salary cap. Shoot Jimmy Hill now?How about the poor old lower league clubs?

We are also losing the wealth of young british talent being developed as all the foreign imports are not giving them the opportunity to break into the first team (with exceptions).

True quality will always comethrough no matter what foriegn imports we have, the rest, well what is the point in having proffesional players right down to conferancelevel anyway?

I agree the present wages are obscene but capping would not work. Steve64k has the right idea, limit the number of foreign born players on the pitch for any one game and then let market forces do the rest, but it does need FIFA backing to work effectively.

Problem about DoogieTyBrenin idea is that as long as we are in the European Union, foreign-born only applies to players from outside EU member nations...

NeilBaker, That problem could be solved if FIFA & UEFA took a stance on the amount of non-indigenous players allowed to take the field at anyone time - not the amount in the squad.

FIFA & UEFA would never get it past the European Court of Human Rights, sadly, because there would be a club out there who would challenge them - and it needn't be a big club. Who was Marc Bosman before the court case?

here in oz the salary cap is in place in the other codes (rugby and aussie rules) and it has evened up the competitions. the new a-league football comp also has something in place where there is a limit on the number of highly paid players. i know it does not have the money of europe, but there is an even quality about the teams. that has to be an okay thing, doesn't it?
