O'Neill - Barry Was Terrific

Martin O'Neill has said 'Gareth Barry was terrific' after last nights performance against Reading and has re-stated that it is 'really important' that the 25-year-old midfielder stays at Villa.

O'Neill said: 'Gareth Barry was terrific. He played really well and scored a fantastic goal to win it for us.We want to keep him and we are in the throes of doing something about it. I want him to stay. It is really important to us. He is a popular lad and we want to keep him. I don't want to pre-empt anything but I definitely want him to stay at Villa.'

And on the match, O'Neill admitted Villa started 'slowly in the game and that was not the plan.'

Adding: 'We got ourselves a goal down and got into a bit of a tizz. But we got an equaliser from the penalty spot before the interval which was psychologically a bit boost. A great goal won the game for us but even then we couldn't finish it off and have plenty to do but I was delighted with the win and the response from the fans and the players.'

Barry will thrive and play for England by the end of the Season. This is his team, we are on our way to greatness with our new captain, Olof also seems in more command with out the responsability.

MO'N was still cagey when asked about Barry's future last night, but the fact he has been given the captaincy and he is clearly loving his football at the moment indicates to me he is staying at Villa Park.

Odreary would have been watching (listening for the resuly) I bet he is dreading the villa finishing anywhere near the top of the table. As for Barry its not just him, he scored because someone else crossed the ball. Crossing the ball was never an option last season, Barry will stay at Villa and become one of the Villa Allstars ***** BARRY***** ****************

Why is there still a question over Barry staying? If Barry doesn't want to commit to Villa then sod him. Barry is a good player but we are a great club.

Agree 100% with the article heading. Lead by example. Losing him would be a tremendous blow, replacing him, very difficult.
