According to a report by Graham Hill in the Birmingham Mail online, Olof Mellberg has decided captaincy isn't for him.
The Sweden international has also refused to reveal his feelings about departed manager David O'Leary. It is suggested the player and manager had a rocky relationship but Mellberg won't be drawn on it saying it is now in the past.
'I won't go into that, the manager has left now and whatever problems we had were sorted out in the dressing room. Because I was the captain under him we talked about a lot of things, I don't think it would be right to talk about that even though the manager has gone. All managers have their good and bad points, but I prefer to talk about those things while they are at the club.'
'There's no point in saying too much after they've gone. We have to look to the new season, that's the most important thing for the club.'
Mellberg, who stepped down as Sweden captain after the World Cup, also says he hasn't looked for a move away from Villa and hasn't spoken to anyone.
Our poll last week had the majority saying that Gareth Barry should be our new captain, hopefully he will still be at Villa if offered the honour as reports today suggest he is off to the South coast and Portsmouth.
