Mellberg No Longer Villa Captain

According to a report by Graham Hill in the Birmingham Mail online, Olof Mellberg has decided captaincy isn't for him.

The Sweden international has also refused to reveal his feelings about departed manager David O'Leary. It is suggested the player and manager had a rocky relationship but Mellberg won't be drawn on it saying it is now in the past.

'I won't go into that, the manager has left now and whatever problems we had were sorted out in the dressing room. Because I was the captain under him we talked about a lot of things, I don't think it would be right to talk about that even though the manager has gone. All managers have their good and bad points, but I prefer to talk about those things while they are at the club.'

'There's no point in saying too much after they've gone. We have to look to the new season, that's the most important thing for the club.'

Mellberg, who stepped down as Sweden captain after the World Cup, also says he hasn't looked for a move away from Villa and hasn't spoken to anyone.

Our poll last week had the majority saying that Gareth Barry should be our new captain, hopefully he will still be at Villa if offered the honour as reports today suggest he is off to the South coast and Portsmouth.

Steven Davis for captain then if Barry is off. Hopefully the reduction in pressure will see Mellberg back to his best.

Nice to see someone at Villa with a bit of integrity, certainly has not come from examples above (appart fro mO'Neill of course)

Hi Villain came back to visit you, went looking for a game where the teams have massive international status like villa but could only find chelsea and liverpool. just been having some civilized mailing with some other villa fans about our discussion and they say you yourself have a sort of international status....LoL your from another planet. We at pompey never intend to offend specially on other peoples web sites so apologies. Deanovilla your Steven Davis is a class act who would grace any club, new manager, new captain its worked before.

Captain or not, I'm just delighted that Olof is still around for the upcoming campaign. He'd have been a difficult act to replace.
