Martin Laursen Targets Arsenal

Great news for Martin Laursen as he believes he could be fit for selection in time for the Premiership opener against Arsenal on August 19th.

The 29-year-old Denmark international's Villa career has been blighted by a series of injury problems with his knee. However he has played another 45 minutes (Tuesday against NEC Nijmegen) and has felt no ill effects.

Laursen said: 'I came through it okay on Tuesday and the knee felt good. Everything's still going to plan and I'm feeling good, so I'm happy about things. It's been four weeks since we started building-up and I couldn't have asked for more. I'm satisfied, that's for sure. I would like to be available for the gaffer for Arsenal. We have to see over the next couple of days whether there's any reaction from the knee but I think I will be alright.'

Adding: 'It was the plan that I played 45 minutes and I feel good. Hopefully I'll play a part in the Friday game against Groningen as well.'

Hopefully he will be ready to play aston villas first game of the season on saturday.

If he really is fit again and there are no relapses on his knee injury this time, then this might be the first time the phrase "he's like a new signing" is actually true!

He really looks on course for a dream return to the premiership. Whether Arsenal comes just that bit too early for him I guess we'll see. Its certainly not worth rushing things now, not after all the recovery and hard work that has gone into getting him back to this stage. No one, particularly the two Martins will want to jeopardize things now.

Bob - Just more of the same speculation - New Manager - linked to all players - He hasn't evan assesed what he needs to do yet. My suspicion is he'll go for 2 or 3 players - a dependable holding midfielder ie Graveson maybe, a play maker ie malbranque or petskov and a knock down merchant upfront anyones guess there

Fingers crossed for Laursen but I still have my doubts. The fact that he still has to ice his knee after 45 minutes of football doesn't bode well at all, add to that the fact that even if he is fit he's hardly played football for 2 years!! I'm sure you must lose it a bit....

He is a good player but i really dont know about him, he never really took off did he. Watever happens, i hope the rumours are true that we will snap up Owen Hargreaves from Bayern. Who gives a ***** if he want born in England and has been German based all his career. You watch, some team in the premiership will get him and hell be runnin amuck. We should have him run amuck for us. He can play at the back as well, an all round, versatile footballer. As for Laursen, with him eyeing Arsenl, itll be too soon and hell be out and his career out the window, just like Patrik Fat Burger. If we sign who were rumoured to sign (Petrov, who we most likely are, Malbranque or possibly Gravesen) there shouldnt be any reason for this season to be a disappointment
