Mellberg Looking For Pre-Season Test

Aston Villa and Sweden captain Olof Mellberg has admitted the club were right not to go for another pre-season tour of Sweden.

Mellberg explained, 'We have gone to Sweden in the last few years but the games have not really tested us enough. It does not really help to beat teams by 10 goals. It is not enough of a test for us and this summer we have better games to play.'

'It would not help us to go from easy games into the Arsenal game. They are one of the best teams in Europe so we will have to be well prepared to stand a chance there. Playing against Hannover, Nijmegen and Groningen will give us much better preparation and, if we play as we have done so far, we will be ready for the first game of the season.'

He also says the team are now starting to wind up for the new season adding 'This is now the most important part of the summer for us. We have worked hard in training and we have won three games. Now we must build on that hard work.'

I'm sure having a manager and some new faces would also help them all.

You have to wonder just how beneficial the tour will turn out to be, as we jet out without a manager/caretaker manager at the helm. An opportunity wasted for the new man to get to meet the players, begin to get involved with the team, start to get his ideas across, and pick up on any obvious weaknesses in the side. Only at Villa Park.

Our pre-season has been a shambles really. The only thing the players can aim to get out of it is a bit of match fitness but as far as tactics, best XI etc.. its gonna have to be played by ear when the season kicks off.

At least our goalkeepers will be throughly prepared.
