'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Barry Off & Doug A Duck?

Is this where it starts then? The players see the turmoil and start to jostle for the exit door? The Daily Express today claim that Gareth Barry wants to leave and has told the club so. Maybe Tottenham, who look to soon be 14million better off with the sale of Michael Carrick will come knocking? They've certainly been linked to the versatile midfielder before. The report doesn't have any quotes and does call him Aston Villa's captain though, so maybe we take the report with a pinch of salt because Olof Mellberg is the Villa captain, Barry is his second.

Dennis Mortimer, in his article for the Guardian, suggested this would happen saying Doug should leave as soon as possible to end this turmoil.

'He needs to do that as soon as possible because with the season not far off it's vital the uncertainty surrounding the club gets sorted once and for all. There will be players who could be contemplating leaving, and there is no manager to look after that side of things. If the right man comes in, those players who are thinking about getting away might be prepared to stay. But there's nothing to make the players want to stay at the moment - no new faces, no manager, and a lot of unrest. If I was at Villa now, I'd want to leave.'

He also adds to the call to arms for fans to stay united:

'The players could feel very different if new life is breathed into the club. Ellis has been able to survive four or five possible takeovers but, hopefully, if the fans can really stick together as a group and don't get swayed by the chairman as to who he might bring in as manager, then he will realise he's not wanted and go. Villa supporters have to decide what they want for the next 10 years. A lame duck is what they have got at the moment.'

Barry is a Spurs boy and he knows we are interested. So that might have unsettled him enough last time we went in for him. You guys really better hope your club sorts itself out sooner than later. I hope for the sake of midlands football it doesnt mess up your season completely.

Perhaps the Sven rumor is the most likely.Barry couldnt get a sniff with him as England boss so prob thinks he will be wasted on the bench all season?Sad to see him go if the report is true.

Gareth Barry at Spurs has quite a nice ring to it, think Spurs have/will do the best business this year, forgetting the magical blue money bag.

Ellis has no intention of selling. He has to be made to realise that he has to go. There is no future with him. End of story.

I hope to God he stays at Villa, I would not like to see him at Tottenham, surely there is someone better than Barry, scraping the barrel if you ask me!

I think every player would want to work with O'Neil, they are probably waiting like the rest of us to see what happens. if we get someone else however, expect a torrent of transfer requests.
Saurat
Why if you were a Villa player would you want to leave?? Surely this takeover talk gives everyone associated with the club the first glimmer of optimism that its had for years?!

Half of Saturday gone and the silence is deafening around Villa Park. Has Neville gone in to see the old man? Will Neville be found floating face down in the canal under Spaghetti Junction? Will Svennis and Steve Stride be spotted holding hands in the Palisades? The tension is killing me.
Saurat
What's all this about, i've never heard of you lot before.

We must keep Barry. I sorely hope he doesn't want to leave.

Trouble is andrew144, thats all it is right now, 'a glimmer of optimism', and sadly that just isnt enough for the players, who no doubt to a man are totally frustrated and disillusioned with the current state of affairs at VP. The vast majority probably want out, and its easy to understand why. The new season a mere three weeks away, and all of this uncertainty surrounded by complete apathy has got to be getting to the lads. The club right now is at the crossroads, in the hands of the old boy, and until things become clearer, hopefully over the next few days, the rot will set in deeper.

No news is precisely that ............no news. God it's frustrately so Aston frigging Villa to be sooooo silent. At least tell the supporters whats not true and what is. Surely this can not be contravening some stock market regulation. We should be used to this but it doesn't help.
Steve64k
Well you are halfway there! O leary has gone, surely there is some optimism now?

What a mess, keep it amongst yourselves, would you?
