'If It's Football, It's Vital'

More Of The Same Against Hull?

What a crushing blow for Patrik Berger seems he has suffered yet another injury, this time a calf strain, during pre-season training. Time to admit defeat and retire?

Villa face Hull City tonight at the KC Stadium. Not sure if the Sunshine Band will be there as well, or am I showing my age?

Milan Baros is still out with the foot injury he picked up whilst on World Cup duty with the Czech Republic and Sweden captain Olof Mellberg will also sit out the game but might return for the game against Wolves on Saturday.

Martin Laursen is back in training but is not due back to match action just yet.

Caretaker boss Roy Aitken, explained: 'He's been out ten months. We've not even thought about when he might start a game. At the moment, he's just sticking to the programme given him by Dr Richard Steadman, the specialist he saw out in Colorado, alternately doing a day's training with the first team, then going back on the weights.'

Roy Aitken is looking for more of the same after Villa beat Walsall 5-0. He told the official site:

'It's definitely a step up for us and I'm sure the lads will handle that. It's a nice stadium, good atmosphere and I expect it will be a tough game. We had a tough game there in the cup last season, so we know what it will be like.'

'It's all about getting ready for next season. That's what these games are about. Of course we will enjoy the result and the performance if we get a repeat of Friday night, but the main thing is preparing and being ready for the start of the Premiership season.'

Berger back on the physio table, 1 down, 1 to go.....Laursen your next

Bye Bye Berger, no new manager will want you with your injury record. As for Laursen, if there is any chance for him we must take it as he really is quality and is still young enough to make a comeback
Villain Of The North
Laursen to suffer a knee set back, Delaney - well lets face it - a tooth ache will keep him out! "like having 3 new signings I think O'Leary said a couple of weeks ago" (or was that Ellis!)

Still concerns me that neither Berson or Djemba-Djemba are considered 'up to scratch' and ready to make the squad. O.K., Djemba-Djemba reported back three or four days late, but whats the deal with Mathieu? Take 'em up there, give 'em both a 30 minute or so run out. That'll help them catch up with the remainder of the guys fitness wise (if indeed that really is the problem). Surely some match action is better than a training stint at Bodymoor Heath? As for Berger, its getting ridiculous. His absence doesn't even deserve comment.

One has to wonder why Berger is continuously injured

Glensider makes a good point. I think it boils down to Aitken's connection to the DOL era and DOL's obvious dislike for the two players he signed. It's just ridiculous that they don't get a run out during pre-season. If they don't get a chance to prove themselves in a match situation, what is point of paying their wages?
