Olof Mellberg Staying Put?

Some very patchy reports on Levante attempting to buy Villa captain Olof Mellberg. One report suggests David O'Leary tried to 'engineer' the Swedish defenders exit.

However the Spanish club would only bid £2million for the 28-year-old and Villa wanted in the region of £4millioin.

Levante sporting director Manuel Salvador said: 'The key to it all was money. The English club refused to accept our offer and it is now all over.'

Good, with O'Leary gone, I think we'll see a few of our 'want-aways' settle down and see their Villa careers re-ignite, it always happens when a new manager arrives.

WIth any luck we will see the best of Olof Mellberg this season. He never really performed for DOL, mainly coz I dont think he liked or respected him.
DeanoVilla
Why would we want to sell him anyway? In my opinion hes one of our best players and has been quality ever since we bought him.
Villa1982
Very dissapointed last season wil olly, afterall he is the captain but did not give a captains performance. Lets hope he will this year.

If he's one of your best players Villa1982, I think you're in more trouble than I realised!!

Agree with DeanoVilla, Olof never really showed his quality under O'Leary's direction. It was no secret that there was no love lost between the two, and at times Olof looked far from happy with his lot. Quality central defender, still more than capable of doing the business for us. lil_blues_fan, banters one thing, but why post juvenile comments like the one above. No, Olof is no lover of your lot, and has made his views known from time to time, so supposedly you're keen to have a little dig back. But those sort of statements just make your lack of appreciation as to what makes a quality central defender, evident to all.

I think if he gets a regular partner at the back he'l be back to his best. He played with three different parteners last season, as well as playing with an injury. Thank God he's staying.

Not been at his best for 18months, but stability with Laursen ? may well help... lets hope so

Think Laursen will help Olof settle. He's more of a calming influence than Ridgewell and can help in organising the back four. Would like to see Cahill given a good run this season though
