'If It's Football, It's Vital'

No Go For 'Gooch'

IC Brum are reporting that a projected move for Liege based defender Oguchi Onyewu will be halted by the fact that the man who discovered him, chief scout Ian Broomfield has moved to Portsmouth.

One of the better players (well there weren't many) in the USA squad at WC2006, DC-born Onyewu is rumoured to be available for around the £3million mark. This could fit quite nicely with the £3million set aside for James Milner, who now appears to be staying at Newcastle.

Oguchi's Agent had this to say:

'It's fair to say that in my talks with Ian Broomfield it was more than just a lodge of interest. But I haven't spoken to anyone at Aston Villa since Broomfield left.'

Is it just a scout’s interest I wonder? Do we actually need another centre back with the potential return of Laursen, the emergence of rookie Cahill, and the hope that Liam Ridgewell remembers how to defend?

'I am not sure if David is on holiday at the moment, and would they still be interested? I'm not sure if David has seen him play, and I don't know what he thinks of him. But he is certainly good enough'

at last, a decent journalist on the site! ;-))
The Fear
I thought he was going to MiddlesVilla? Looked fairly good at the WC but I would rather see Cahill given a decent run in the team

You shouldn't be so hard on yourself JF!
murph
Never heard us linked to him at all in the past. Broomfield will probably get him in at Porstmouth, they are supposedly looking at Sol,Campbell as well. Not highest on our agenda a central defender in my opinion and all I saw him do was foul during the WC
fatloser
I'm a bit unsure now. That is actually him isn't it?
murph
It's rubbish. Central defence is the only area on the pitch where we actually have enough players and to spend 3m on an American player would madness akin to the glory days of Leeds.
ooahPaulMcGrath
We can sleep easy in our beds. We dont have 3m to spend, do we?
glensider
I have to agree glensider, surely there are not still people out there who think we will spend any money this summer? If we did though he's a typical villa signing, an american centre half. We would probably play him on the right wing and wonder why he's crap. (sorry for sounding suicidal).
tylervilla
I think midfield is more of a priority!
