Villa Fans Advise Mellberg To Go

Villa Fans Advise Mellberg To Go

Reports in The Star today back up reports made all through the week that Bayern Munich are about to bid for Sweden international captain and Villa defender Olof Mellberg.

The sum mentioned in the paper will get Doug jumping up and down for joy on his new yacht as it is the money that matters, not the good of the club. They say the fee will be in the region of £6million. That bid would guarantee his signature and it would be just down to whether the player wants to go to an ambitious and successful club or remain at one who sell their star players and rely on untested kids.

We asked in the week what would you do if you were Mellberg, seems the vast majority - 88% - would stay in Germany or more to another big club. Only 8% would stay at Villa and 4% were unsure.

Interesting to see if there is any substance to the links, I must admit I've been amazed that no one has come in for him before now, I'd not blame him for leaving, we are in the same boat as when Gareth Southgate left claiming the club had no direction and were drifting. Not only that, but Mellberg hasn't been the same player since David O'Leary came to Villa Park and last season he was often at sixes and sevens with all the different central defensive partners and constant changes to the line up due to injuries.

Just to set the record straight, we don't want Mellberg to leave. He's our best defender and a rock for us at the back but with the club in the state it's in we would understand any player who wanted to leave. :(

He is a quality player and Villa will really miss him. I really think you should keep him as he is a rock in your defence and he is capable of scoring quality goals from corners too.

I think we are in a worse situation than when Southgate left.

This doesnt worry me. He often struggles for pace and gives the ball away too often. £6m would be good for us. Barry would be a good captain who talks to the team.

Not to mention that Barry came to Villa as a centre back so, if necessary can fill in there too (not that O'Leary seams to have noticed this) In fact Barry is not just capable, he's quality in left-midfield, left-back and centre-back positions, there is no way we should sell him. If (and it's a big if) Laursen gets himself fit and remains relatively injury free, I don't think we'd be too badly off without Melly, but as things stand, I'd hate to see him go, plus he's one of the few that really seams to care about the club.

Your only problem would be that, if he does go, you know that all the money you get for him wont be ploughed back in the transfer kitty.

MaKes sense to sell him now while he is a premiership player, you will get more money this way rather than keeping him for a year and selling him as a Championship player.

Agree FEn_100. the money would go on funding 'corporate activities' or whatever other BS Doug decides. We're getting 7m from the sale of land and any other club in our position would be buying players...but not Doug.
