Mellberg Looking At Second Spot

Villa and Sweden skipper says second will have to do!

Olof Mellberg thinks that Sweden are in a battle for the runners up spot after only drawing in their opening match v Trinidad & Tobago. As he faces Paraguay tonight, the defender is being realistic:

'In a way, we are playing for second because of the results in the first round of matches. I definitely expect England to beat Trinidad & Tobago so that means we will have to look at second place in the group. But we'll have to see ? it's such an important game and we know we need to get a result. That's imperative.'

He was also asked about an 'incident' with Fredrik Ljungberg and said quite simply: 'Apologise to Fredrik? For what? Anything that happens in the dressing room, we want to keep to ourselves. It was impossible in this case but you try to keep things in-house.'

I suspect that Olof's Villa Park struggles are turning him into a defeatist. Isnt he waving the white flag of surrender just a little too easily? Wins for both England and Sweden in their respective second group games, will mean that a Sweden victory against England in the final game would see the Swedes top the group. Olof, its never over 'til the fat lady sings. Shake off your VP negativity.

It may be a little bit of strategy for Sweden. Claim that 1st spot is out of reach and play down their chances, then come out for the 3rd game and batter England.

they need to beat us 3-0 to come higher than us, cant see it happening. we need germany to beat ecuador or we play them in the next round...gulp
son_of_cher
Correct cher, i cannot see them beating us, and i reckon a tame draw will be played out so that neither side has injuries going into the KO stages.
FEn_100
After yesterdays games, all they need to do now is beat us, 1-0 will do, and they top the group. We need to hope that whatever the outcome of the Sweden game, we pull the lucky straw (by finishing second if need be) and avoid an early meeting with the Germans. We might be able to wriggle through against Ecuador in the round of sixteen, but we'll have to be right at the top of our game to even stand a chance against the Germans.
