The Birmingham Mail are claiming that progressive and ambition Tottenham Hotspur are about to bid for Gareth Barry.

Spurs boss Martin Jol is known to be a long time admirer of our left sided midfielder (and sometimes left back) and wants to take the 24-year-old to White Hart Lane.

In my ever so humble opinion Gareth Barry was the player who kept us up last year with his determination and skill. If we sell him then we really will be putting up the white flag.

O'Leary has recently said that the only players that he won't consider selling are Barry and Steven Davis, but with a £4million in the offing, his resolve might be severely tested by the mad lust of chairman Doug for cash.

What makes the link even more worrying is that Gareth Barry was a boyhood fan of Spurs.

Barry, who acted as captain several times when Olof Mellberg was injured was voted by team mates as Villa's Player of the Year.

Barry has two years left on his contract so the menace of B6 is bound to want to cash in, especially with the financial mess he has made of Villa.

Barry, who scored six goals last season, has been known to be upset at the amount of positional changes he has had to do and can't have missed the total difference between Spurs and Villa with the Spurs board now doing what our lot are incapable of doing, choosing a decent manager and backing him.

I fear Barry will jump at the chance of a move whether O'Leary wants him to stay or not, especially after the left sided midfielder was scandalously ignored by Sven for the English squad.

Lets just hope they are listening and that DOL is true to his word about him not being for sale. I can here it now though well the player was unhappy and I dont keep unhappy players, thats why we sold him for 50p in the end!!

I think if he was selected for the cup squad, he might have stayed. But I can't see him staying at Villa; if there was a light at the end of the tunnel, then perhaps is would but that is the problem - there is no foreseeable end to the current regime and everything that goes with it. If the likes of Barry jump ship during the summer, you will be in for a very long season, battling with Watford and Sheffield Utd.

If he comes to us then he will be our new left back with reports that we are signing the next Robben in Ryan Babel coming out of the lane this afternoon who will be our left winger - him and Chimbonda at right back will do very nicely thanks! I fear for Villa, I really do, how can a club with so much history and following go down the pan so quickly - it was only 2 years ago that Spurs and Villa were equal par.

Lets face it, Barry has been very happy at Villa under Doug but not so happy under O'Dreary. If he goes it's O'Dreary's fault. I for one will give up all hope if they sell Barry without having VERY significant funding to really build for the future and O'Leary is not the man to be in charge of that project!
