No Rush For Newcastle On Milner

Oh come on Glen Roeder, be fair, let us have James Milner permanently. Would it help if we all said pretty please?

Glenda, the new Newcastle United boss, who has been given special dispensation to manage despite not being qualified - and other managers being forced to have the qualification - ramble, ramble, have said that the Magpies are in no rush to make a decision on Milner who enjoyed a successful season on-loan at Villa.

He said: 'James Milner has had a very good season at Villa and has impressed David O'Leary. But I will be sitting down with the chairman at the end of the week to discuss the whole squad, and that will include discussing James' future. We don't have to rush into making a decision.'

Music to Doug's ears. Don't worry Doug, you can put away the cheque book now dear.

I am surprised Newcastle appear to be so willing to offload Milner - I'm expecting a classic Villa transfer deal collapse any day now...presumably when Roader has that meeting...

The problem for Newcastle to keep Milner is that he is now ready and expecting to play regular premiership football and his position is covered by Nobby, who is without doubt better. Yes he's coming to the end of his career but he's not there yet. The timing for Newcastle is bad on this one so they may as well cash in on Milner, hopefully to Villa.

If Roeder does decide that Milner is surplus to requirements at St James Park, something I still have doubts about despite O'Leary's supreme confidence, then I expect other clubs to also move in. There was talk that Leeds United, if promoted, would welcome him back with open arms.

This is spin from Doug. He's signed - but they are trying to drag it out to gain interest. I have a feeling that Barry and Baros may go in the opposite direction. Spurs? the best season they could ever hope for and no Champions league - says everything about the league unfortunately
