Villa - Cahill Wait Goes On

Villa - Cahill Wait Goes On

Aston Villa's rookie defender Gary Cahill has told Sky Sports that he is happy to leave any talk about a new contract until the end of the season. In fairness, it isn't exactly a long wait but after a couple of impressive performances, especially scoring the goal of the season against Birmingham City, the quicker the situation is sorted the better.

There have been suggestions that Villa won't budge on the offer they have put to him and that the defender will not accept those terms. It would be a massive loss to lose a home grown talent like Cahill who for many years has been tipped as the cream of the crop amongst the youth academy.

He told Sky Sports News: 'We have both agreed we will leave it until the end of the season. It is fine as I want to push on and concentrate on my football. The most important thing for me is to play week in, week out in The Premiership and I am more than happy at this club.'

He also says the future at Villa is bright.

'There has been a bit of doom and gloom, but hopefully we can pick it up next season and the future does look better when we have youngsters coming through the system. There is obviously something going right at Villa if youngsters are coming through the system.'

A different angle on that point of view is the youth have had to be used because not enough money is given to managers to build a squad via the transfer market!

Give him a better contract he is a very good prospect. The youth have been used because our current management team have wasted cash on transfers !

He'll sign, it's being put off to look like we've "signed a new player" in the closed season. I expect Mellberg, Milner, DJ twins, Hendrie and DLC to depart.

I think Tarzan has it. Mellberg is sold for 6m and his replacement is Cahill (free). Nice bit of business that. Should make up for the loss on Crouch. All we lose is our best centre back, oh!

The board have certainly made cynics of us all. Can't see us even attempting a 'big' signing this summer.
