'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Villa - Cahill Looking To Stay

Defender Gary Cahill, who scored a spectacular goal in our 3-1 win over Birmingham City is confident that he will get his contract sorted in the summer and will extend his stay:

'I've still got a long time here and there are a lot of things that aren't about money. It's more important for me to play in the Premiership and if you play there then the money comes anyway.'

Adding 'I've done well in my two games but I don't want to be a flash in the pan. The contract is not even on my mind. I'm more than happy at Villa and I'm enjoying my football. If I can keep being consistent in performances then everything else will take care of itself.'

He also says: 'It's been a frustrating season and I'm glad it's finishing on a high. I was hoping to kick on this season and make my presence felt to a lot of people. Hopefully now I've got my chance I can keep my place in the team. First-team football is the most important thing for me.'

Cahill missed a great portion of the season with an injury, otherwise, with our defensive crisis throughout the year, he would have got his chance before now.

I think that it is the agent involved here thats probably giving young Cahill some pretty poor advice. He needs to knuckle down, make a first team starting place his own, and then start looking for a bigger and better deal. Yes he looks very promising, and yes he's made a very big impression on the media and supporters alike, but lets get realistic here, he's only been around for five minutes, and still basically remains merely a promising youngster.
