Hands Off Gareth Barry!

Well here is one bit of good news, Gareth Barry is not for sale.

Rumours have circulated that Gareth Barry is a target for Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur, however David O'Leary has warned potential suitors that the player isn't available and won't be made available.

He said:

'I wouldn't let Barry go. I had a conversation some time ago when I thought Graeme Souness (when at the helm of Newcastle) was sounding me out about Gareth. I made it clear he wouldn't be for sale and that still stands.'

Wonder if Doug has been told?! Also, more worryingly, I wonder if the player agrees? He apparently supported Spurs as a boy and how many of our players would leave Villa Park this summer given a chance? Careers in football are short and these players want to play in Europe. The only way our squad will play in Europe next season is if Doug organises an away day to Ibiza!

Barry, who has been in outstanding form this season despite the problems at Villa, has played 31 games in the Prem with just one goal to his name. He has also scored 3 goals in the Cup competitions. I think we would have been in the relegation zone already if not for his efforts this season. He is likely to miss the local derby against West Bromwich Albion on Sunday due to a knock he picked up against Fulham. Barry will face a late fitness test.

I really hope this is true...if there is one player who I would be most gutted to see go it would be Barry. I'm not sure if he would be too keen to leave, he seems the level headed type and also loyal and commited. Of course that is all wishful thinking and will be interesting to see his reaction if a bid is made.

he is the sort of player who will surely want European football in his career? We have to hope we get a board who can deliver that to keep the few quality players.

We have so many players within our supposed "team" that would want, and deserve European football. If the likes of Southgate in far from his prime, Viduka, Hasselbaink and their assortment of premiershpi rejects can get to the UEFA semi-finals, despite being backed by an atrocious fanbase who suddenly came out of the woodwork during the Roma matches...why cant we?

Sorry to rain on everyone's parade. But has anyone told Barry and his agent he isn't going anywhere? Player power rules these days.

Assurances from club officials concerning the future of Gareth Barry mean absolutely nothing. We've heard it all before. The grass has to look greener elsewhere right now for every one of our 'better' players, and if they as individuals want out, then there's nothing that the club will be able to do about that.

We must keep Barry. He's been a good servant to the club and is unlucky not to be involved with England. I wish he was made captain next year as well - maybe that'll persuade him to stay!
